What deals on components did you find today?

Since the ammo shortage, I began trying to stock up on components. I actually started last year by grabbing a couple of containers of primers or bullets every time I shopped at Walmart. Since they are now "woke", they stopped selling pistol bullets and primers, and nearly all powder. So my stocking up slowed considerably. I've only been reloading for a few years and am still a newbie.

Then I bought an AR-10 and had to start prepping to reload for .308, so a lot of my reloading budget went to getting components for that in the middle of the Kung Flu panic. Not pretty.

Now, I'm trying to stock up again and I'm finding it challenging to find good deals on bullets and other components.

A few months ago, I thought 1000 of everything in the main calibers I load for was adequate. Now I'm thinking that instead of 6-12 months of ammo supply as being enough to ride out any shortages, that perhaps a few years worth may be prudent.

Money is always a concern, so I haven't been able to make big bulk purchases, so $50 here and $75 there is the best I can do. That doesn't go very far these days.

Last week I ordered 250 9mm 124gr MPR hollowpoints from RMR. IIRC, the price was $36, or $.14 per round. They showed as out of stock but backorder OK. Ordered them on June 17th and they arrived yesterday, so just under a week. Not bad at all.

I also found 200 fresh 9mm Winchester brass cases being clearanced from Buffalo Arms for $34 and the last of the Hornady 150gr BT .308 bullets for $14.50 for 50. Ordered those on the 21st and they showed up the same day as the RMR order.

I also found a box of RMR 147gr TC flat point 9mm bullets at a gun shop I stopped by about 50 miles away. 250 bullets for $20. Very happy with that. Also found a few boxes of PMC .223 ammo at $10 a box, which is higher, but thankful I found it.

So this week I added another 500 9mm bullets, 200 more fresh cases, 50 more .308 bullets, and found a can of IMR 4895 at the LGS. Spent about $130, which is a bit over budget. Next paycheck I hope to repeat.

You did good all things considered. We are all newbies when it comes to reloading to some extent. Seems there's always more to learn, things to try, tools to get and rabbits holes to pull you in every direction.

Do you belong to any gun clubs? Might be a good way to find brass for free, especially after a 3-gun, USPSA, IPSC, action pistol or whatever match. 9mm and .223 are usually fairly abundant after one of those matches.

You already know about RMR and that is the first place I was going to recommend. Another I always get emails from them is American reloading. They often have great deals on Bullets and surplus powder. Great guys. They don't overcharge, and the hazmat and shipping is already included in their low powder prices. Spilt a 16 or 32lb jug with a buddy and you'll be set for awhile!

Primers, usually are a local purchase for anything less than a 5,000ct case. Generally I'll order big batches online and combine it with a big jug or two of powder to even out the hazmat and shipping fees. Currently gone are the days of free shipping and hazmat, but eventually it will be back as demand dies off and stocks start to resemble normal.

All I can add is for you to learn from this shortage. It's not the first and it definitely won't be the last. Stock up when supplies are plentiful and sales abound. If you do, You'll be sitting fat and pretty when the next "panic" rolls around.

Now to answer your question, I've not stocked up on anything today. I've always got an eye out though and for some reason I seem to get a multitude of emails daily from places that sell the above mentioned items.

Keep up the good work stocking up. It's painful to the wallet now, but the investment will pay off down the road.

I started casting bullets (or boolits, thanks to Castboolits.com) a few years ago for my .45-70 govt. BPCR match rifle, which is an Uberti Winchester 1885 high wall clone.

My dad is a subcontractor for a bullet supplier and casts about 40k bullets a year. I cut my teeth helping him out, so I'm pretty good at getting the temp and pour rate just right.

I have my own pot and a few molds, but I just cast for .45-70, .45 Colt, and .40 S&W/10mm.

I only use pre-mixed lead with the tin/antimony already added. I don't cast enough bullets to really worry about scrounging for scrap lead. Using a known hardness helps in avoiding a lot of issues with casting.

I just bought 24lbs of lead from RMR back in January and it is at 18 bn, which has worked well in all my guns. 24lbs will yield about 1000 .40 S&W bullets. Will need to order more lead to be safe, but I only use cast bullets for woods loads these days.

Just before the panic, I built my 223 AR and started to build up ammo for it by going to my local Sportsmans Warehouse picking up a couple of boxes bi-weekly. I was concentrating more on reloading supplies for 6.5 grendel & 30-30. Then came the panic.

Sources for reloading:

MidSouth Shooting Supply: bought powder and primers. Took exactly 2 weeks for it to be shipped and another to arrive.
US Reloading Supply: Dies, bullets, brass. Cool outfit. Ordered some brass Weds and arrived today. Min for free shipping is $25.
Gafs & Sons: Powder measure and brass. Two days to ship and another two-three to arrive.

US Reloading missed a die in the order and I sent an email. The owner, Jim, emailed back and took cared of it right away. So, a shout out to their customer service.

Wasn't cheap, but im glad i found them. Pretty sure im just about ALL set for the foreseeable future.
Could maybe use another 1k each of SRP, LRP, and SPP. i REALLY have to fo some inventory to figure out what im short on but i could def use some more LRP for 30-30 .308 and 6.5CM

Good luck on finding primers. The only ones I found are in the secondary market which I won't buy in. From the messages of CEO's of ammo manufacturers, all the primers are going into manufacturing actual ammunition. So, we will be seeing factory ammo first before we start seeing primers on the shelves.

Good luck on finding primers. The only ones I found are in the secondary market which I won't buy in. From the messages of CEO's of ammo manufacturers, all the primers are going into manufacturing actual ammunition. So, we will be seeing factory ammo first before we start seeing primers on the shelves.

Ive got enough of each to see me through till they become avail if need be. Reload what i have and then start whittling down the .22 surplus i have. (Thanks Tim! )

I bought 2 tins of #11 caps at Coastal the other day and while I was rummaging around in my ammo locker I found an unopened can of Pyrodex FFG I forgot I had. I bought it a while ago as a back up.

I don't even bother to look at my metallic cartridge supply. I have trouble lifting the boxes.

The lead pot is cold as there is no where to put anymore bullets.

I'm down to using ingots for paper weights.

I have been thinking for months that I need to try and match up my primers to projectiles but I have got the motivation to do so yet. It will be a real chore.

And if you've been at reloading for awhile, chances are you've got reloading supplies stashed away in several locations. Best to do this in a spreadsheet, where you can track the supplies and locations, so when you go looking for them again, you'll know where they are.

Thanks to a heads up from another member here, I was able to score a brick of primers and a pound of powder from Cabelas on Monday. I hadn't seen primers in Cabelas since before Covid hit and powder only a couple of times since then.

Dude i hear ya.. I kinda highly doubt i have enough room (or weight cap.) To store this recent purchase. Probably going into the overflow pile.
Part of the reason i am kinda being forced to actually use this stuff and load it. I need to condense it!

Found some really good deals on the classifieds and now im overstock on brass and pellets and even pistol powder since i sold some items and someone was kind enough to trade some powders.
Wasnt even going to get into .45 was never really a fan of it. Mostly a 9 and 10mm fan. But damn near free components will do that to you. Actually it was literally free after i sold the stuff i couldn't use. I still have more than half of it for keeps AND made more than my money back and was able to give some good deals. So win win win.

Our Cabelas is always crowded. It doesn't help that is sits in a strip mall with a large casino. People will stop by and see if there's ammo+ then go gamble. But it seems many stores are getting stock. Unfortunately, The LGS which I'm can sometimes able to find stuff is located next door to where my mother lives. Everytime I go, I'm obliged to visit her and she always bombard me with her demanding I take her to the casino.
