Always love these threads, but couple things I hardly ever see (its in the pic just above)...

Road flares and fencing pliers.

We did a little "experimental bug out" years ago is some pretty crappy, windy rainy Wilamette Valley weather. All the little cotton balls in Vaseline, windproof matches and lighters - NOTHING worked to start a fire. Nothing. Until someone whipped out a road flare. Fire on. Had a good fire throughout the night.

The fencing pliers - great tool! Does a little bit of everything.

I'd start by just taking 1 weekend and try living in your backyard for 48 hours without any use of your house or its contents. Only what you "packed" with you. After that you might have a decent idea of a few things you want to put in this fantasy bag.

I keep a tube of, "Hot Snot Fire Starter" in my get home/bug out bag. I also keep some Hurricane matches and Ferro rod with a knife for sparkling the ferro rod. I also keep a life straw and stainless steel water bottle.
