Wear shoes while dry firing

Yup. Similar mistake, and if it weren't for the bone, would have lost a finger.
Turned it into a first aid teaching moment for the kids.

Reminds me of when I was showing a co-worker how to operate a commercial meat saw without the safety guard. "Uhhhh, don't do this, it's not safe.... OUCH!"

I've always worried about that when dry firing and I usually wear shoes. After I'm done with the drill I have found the mag in all sorts of places...behind me...under the couch...safety first, safety always.

I was using a folding knife to push down thru a leather belt when the blade folded, filleted a 1/4" chunk off the side of my thumb.

I almost looped off my pinky finger with an Old Timer back when when I was about 10 years old.
