The intruder did not live there and the girl did not have a key. Odd.
Bulleted list of facts from the linked article in the OP:
  1. There was only one key for the apartment, and the shooter (Osby) had it.
  2. Although Osby was home, his vehicle was not visible/not in the driveway.
  3. The woman (Muir) lives in the apartment with (at the very least) Osby.
From the OP's linked article:

The initial report said Osby lives in Fircrest, but police now say he had been living in that apartment since September.
Gia Muir also lives in the apartment, and told police that she and Smith came home about 10:30 p.m. to find the door locked.
Osby has the only key, and Muir believed he wasn't home at the time because she did not see his car outside, court documents said.
Muir told officers that she and Smith knocked on the door and windows, and rang the doorbell, for about 10 minutes but no one answered.

Read somewhere else that Osby and the deceased (Smith) were/used to be roommates. That seems odd, when you look at what happened...

Lotsa stuff not adding up here and things making you go...

This article suggests that the deceased (Smith) used to live at the apartment where he was killed, and that he "had some kind of relationship" with his killer (Osby).

From the article:

The man who died from a gunshot wound late on Monday night was 22-year-old Beckett Smith, a Kennewick resident who police say had some kind of relationship with the man who shot him.

and

Officer Trujillo confirmed that the apartment where the incident took place was Beckett's last known address.

According to the 2nd posted article:
When KPD officers arrived, they made contact with Beckett, who sustained gunshot wounds to the chest.

I thought this part was a bit odd, in that it possibly suggests a witness was not telling the entire truth:
Osby's account is a bit different from the accounts of witnesses. Officer Trujillo confirms that charges against the suspect could be reversed as a result of their investigation.
One of the biggest problems with "news". Never know when you are getting even half the real story any more
