Voting Rights Bill with NRA Gun Amendment Pulled from Consideration -

    yesterday from Commondreams.org Newswire -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 20, 2010 Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Today, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced that the District of Columbia Voting Rights Act would be pulled from consideration in the U.S. House of Representatives because of the chamber’s inability to stop a National Rifle Association (NRA) amendment that would have effectively gutted the city’s gun laws. “The price was way too high,” said Hoyer, who indicated he made the decision along with D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton.

It's too bad the law abiding citizens of DC will continue to be victimized because of Hoyer and Holmes.

So that's how to stop stupid bills going through congress, just introduce common sense gun amendments. They need to keep that in mind for the 6 months or so...

I guess I do not understand the structure of how the city of Dc is run.... must be some department of Congress or something..... subject to the whims and agendae of that congress. It would be another matter if normal (non-government) citizens could have some say in how their city is run.... or move out entirely, leaving the mess behind for the federal nutjobs to manage. They;d them become victims of their own stupidity.

wonder what it will take to change it....... citizen uprising? massive change in the composition of congress? (hey, the latter should happen anyway,. Their tyranny should end, come about next November)

It was bad legislation regardless of DC gun rights.

The Constitution spells out why DC doesn't have voting rights - it's not a state, it's a federal territory. If they want voting rights, they'll need to amend the Constitution or become a state, not pass legislation. They tried an amendment in 1978 and failed. They also tried to become a state in the 80's and failed.
