A few years ago I inherited my grandfathers old Remington M 34 bolt-action .22. Its a neat old gun, accurate, and I enjoy shooting it, but my eyesight is getting to the point where iron sights on long guns just dont work well for me any more. I see no way to mount a scope on this rifle without some sort of gunsmithing work, drilling tapping etc. Do these guns have any sort of collector value that would be ruined by mounting a scope? Suggestions?

If its a NRA target model or M34P, yes... maybe $400 in very good plus condition. There were some bases and scopes made for it back in the 30s thru the mid 50s, but I've not seen any, other than some beat up Lyman stuff a year or two ago, available. It would need to be drilled and tapped for scope bases. Champions Choice, Out Back Gun Parts and Jack First might be able to provide more information or parts.

Remington has a bit of data in their archives here.

Cheers,
C
