It's odd that some of these same Political Anti-Gunners would point to Venezuela as the example of what we should aspire too, yet overlooking what the end results have been.

Never give up your arms!

Now the criminal mother is unleashed," Luis Farias told Fox. "Trying to ban guns didn't take guns off the streets. Nobody cares about the law; the criminals don't care about the law."

Never a truer statement made!

The allure of "free stuff" is just too great for the lazy masses, sort of a moth to the flame scenario.

I think you are right. I remember when a young person I asked my father, that with all the horrors of Communism, why it still appeals to people. He answered me with one word: "Envy".

The basic equation of Communism is "From each, according to his ability, to each, according to his need." If you are the type of person who has lots of needs and few abilities, Communism looks like a great deal.

Back during the Cold War I did border patrol along two Communist borders along Eastern Europe. I saw first hand the measures that they took to keep people in their great Communist enclaves. Border fences topped with razor wire, walls, land mines, anti personnel mines hanging on the fences, guard towers, etc. Best of all was their orders to shoot to kill anyone who tried to escape.
Such a paradise, why would anyone want to leave to begin with? Oh yeah...Communism.

And yet I've heard those on the American left who say that Venezuela's collapse was caused by "American meddling". The fact that Marxism is incompatible with basic human nature totally escapes them.

Anyone notice that one of the first steps towards successful socialism is civilian disarmament? Some people don't know what's good for them, and the troublemakers will resist.

Indeed, it has been part of their play book for a while:

"If the opposition disarms, all is well and good. If it refuses to disarm, we shall disarm it ourselves." — Joseph Stalin, The Political Report of the Central Committee, The Fifteenth Congress of the CPSU (December 7, 1927)
