true a rifle as a car gun seems like a bit much. but to have anything at all like a 9mm or something small and maneuverable seems like a better move just in general to have to defend yourself if ever necessary
Depends on the rifle. Of the two guns shown below guess which one sticks out farther when in normal shooting position?

Answer: The short barrel rifle is roughly 6" shorter when they are in shooting position (pistol - arms extended as normal, rifle - stock on shoulder as normal). Also rifle rounds are more effective than pistol rounds. Also the rifle shown above can be shot with stock folded if needed. Capacity is higher than pistol. Accuracy is much, much, better as is rate of fire. Range of course is much, much, farther than pistol. It can easily be put in a sling bag, tennis racket bag etc and carried with you or set on seat or floorboard unzipped and ready for action while remaining unseen. Also more effective against armor than a pistol.

I always understood "truck gun" to mean something that stayed in your truck 24/7/365. On the floor behind the seat, buried under lug wrenches, Bungie cords, and cans of fix-a-flat. Something you could plink with out in the middle of nowhere, dispatch an injured animal, stuff like that. So rolling up on a situation or dealing with perps wasn't really a factor. That would be where your concealed carry piece would come into play. And I had just such a setup for about the last 10 years I lived in Idaho - a Savage 24 .22lr/.410, buried deep behind the seat along with a .30 cal. ammo can of .22 & .410 ammunition.
However, now - with the absolute epidemic of car break-ins (and that's assuming the whole vehicle doesn't get stolen!), coupled with the new "stolen gun prompt reporting" laws, the whole concept of the traditional "truck gun" just doesn't make sense anymore. I don't even feel comfortable about leaving a set of cheap jumper cables in my truck anymore, let alone a firearm! Best to just carry on your person - and worry about your HOUSE getting broken into.
P-89 in the console and carbine length 30-30 behind the seat.

1938 Winchester model 1894 Trapper 16.25" a bit scruffy but very good working condition and with a very good bore. Stays in a locked safe in my Willys. With a box of 20 in the locked console. Not a fast deployment weapon. But its there if needed.

I have a truck gun and the main thing i want is it to be super secured from unauthorized goons and ease of access for me to get to quickly with said goons on my bubblegum...(hypothetically speaking of course)
