Using Non-Fiber Optic Material in Fiber Optic Sights

Have any of you tried to find an alternative material to replace the fiber optics in your sights? If so, what did you use?

I have a hard time with the fiber optic on one of my guns and I would like to experiment with some kind of white plastic in place of the fiber optic material.
