UPDATE: No hearing Wednesday on anti-self-defense measure; bill off agenda

Angry Evergreen State gun owners can “stand down” – for the moment – and not travel to Olympia this afternoon for a hearing on House Bill 2067 before the House Ways & Means Committee, because it has been removed as an agenda item.

According to Joe Waldron, a veteran Olympia gun rights lobbyist and legislative director for the Bellevue-based Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA), “That doesn’t mean we’re safe, it just means we have a breather.”

So that urgent alert you posted turned out to be another non-issue... Great. Thanks for raising the alarm.

Keep your powder dry, gents. There are real threats out there, and every time you ********* into the weeds, it's another wasted ******* ********. If you've ever spent any time around legislative offices, you'll know that the "regulars" who always write in don't have any influence after a while.

No, it was not "another non-issue," and you can park the attitude somewhere else down there south of the Columbia River..

This was a genuine threat, an honest-to-all the gods in the heavens piece of legislation being pushed by the chairman of the committee that was set to hear it.

But in stepped NRA and CCRKBA and they fired up the troops who deluged Olympia with phone calls and e-mails to such a volume that cooler heads decided now is not the time to pick a major fight with about 1 million gun owners living in this state.

If you spend any time around the Washington legislature, you'll know that when phones suddenly start ringing and e-mails start jamming INBOXES on a single issue, these guys start talking to one another and figure out that something is wrong, and they move pretty fast to avoid an ugly confrontation. In Olympia, they still vividly remember the absolute pounding that Initiative 676 took back in 1997. That gun control measure got people so p-o'd that it couldn't even muster 30 percent of the vote. They also don't care to see a lot of really angry gun owners jamming a committee meeting.

Indeed, keep your powder dry. The real threats out there, gents and ladies, include the peanut gallery cynics in our own camp.:s0054:

An email I just recieved

"Dear Mark;

Thank you for your email message opposing HB 2067. You will be happy to know that the bill has been removed from the Ways and Means Committee agenda- this means there will not be a hearing on the bill. We were able to get our message to the House Speaker that our constituents did not want this bill and it was removed from the agenda yesterday afternoon.

Sincerely,

Charles Ross
State Representative
14th Legislative District
360-786-7856"

As a WASHINGTONIAN, I appreciate the heads up alert. While those who live south of us might not be as concerned about our legislature as we are, I know that it is VERY important to be keep aware of what they (political types) are up to in the wee small hours of the day and night.
