Kinda hard for a civvy with no ordinance to crack such a structure while being shot at, and I expect a limited nuke war that will kill the majority of humanity pretty quickly. Your mileage may vary

You can shoot out...they can shoot in. Radiation poisoning thru your aquafir will kill you as well as anybody else. Wood smoke marks your place as inhabited and valuable. You shoot one starvin' marvin, the sound marks your location and dangerousness to the next, who won't ask since you have established your cred.

I go back and forth about urban versus rural in a SHTF scenario.
I live in a pretty progressive/liberal neighborhood in central Eugene. There are lots of nice people here who can be expected to rise to the occasion in a SHTF scenario. There will be a lot of sharing and support. We've already had neighborhood meetings to discuss "disaster preparedness". We have a group called the SNAGO's (Sensitive New-Age Gun Owners) that meets occasionally. It's kind of a dance, because a lot of my friends are opposed to the whole gun thing so I keep it quiet, but eventually, I expect them to change their tune.

While there's no question a collapse is coming, the big questions are: When? How fast? and How far? I expect that it's happen in fits and starts - punctuated equalibrium. Hopefully, most people will see the writing on the wall before the actual SHTF.

Living in a rural location, you can produce much more of your food, but if I did live rural, I'd want to have strong community with close neighbors - all of us committed to supporting one another. The last thing I'd want would to be in a concrete bunker with a bunch of Mutant Zombie Tweekers outside trying get in and nobody around for support.

More power to those who prepare to extreme levels, like some here. That said, remember that 98% don't hardly bother at all for what is coming so there will be a LOT of soft targets for bad guys/groups before they will move on to try and take down preppers.

It is impossible to defend 100%, but good for those who make some effort. Just hopefully the survival mentality isn't all consuming - where one cannot enjoy life a bit - or what is the point?

it's very true,you cant let it consume you or you will be worn out by the time you need to be strong.preppers burnout.

I find these discussions very interesting, I myself grew up in the old country (northern ireland and the northwest of the uk) Not during the worst of the troubles but saw alot during the early 90's. Bombs and armed soldiers in the street was 'normal'
I love America more than any place on the earth and im thankful to be here in the fine state of Oregon. I try to live every day like its my last because sadly i know one day this great nation will fall.
I live in the metro area 'urban' and i try to prep but I doubt i would last long in a SHTF situation simply because i dont want to lose my humanity.
I only have my personal ideas and i think i would simply try to take as many of the 'bad guys' or 'they' with me before i fall 'whoever' 'they' may be.

I do not have children and never will because i know the world 'as we have known it is going to hell'

I give full respect to all of you who are prepared for what may come, but for me i would sooner just enjoy what little bit of life we have left and accept my fate in the end times.

May God have mercy on us all.

Or the first, sounds like the kind of place you would risk a lot to gain a lot. Also the "kill 'em all" attitude makes an coldblooded ambush ethically palatable. Why wouldn't I want to raid this guy if I were a marauder type? Raiding the ill prepared would yield me nothing but bodies to hide. Hell if he is killing the lost sheep that arrive at his door, wasting him is practically a duty to humanity.
Eventually, some kind of society is going to emerge and it won't treat the Predators kindly. So when your heart hardens and you decide to start killing the competition pre-emptively, dig yourself a grave because you have established the manner of your own demise.

No offense and nothing personal but you came from a socialist country and you move into a socialist state so I expect you think like a socialist. Conservative don't "accept fate", we work to make things better and won't lay down and die for anyone. We don't shrivel at the thought of hard work and will fight to keep what we honestly earn. I could go on here but you get the picture.

No offense taken, It was pretty late at night when i typed that and i should of chosen my words better. The conservative government (in the old country) Where in office during most of the troubles in Northern Ireland, I was a conservative and now as I'am in the states im a republican. I agree that you shouldnt let people take what you have earned or indeed let the government take away your rights. I simply meant that after growing up during the troubles and spending time in service of the queen, I have grown weary of violence and desperation and personally would prefare not to live through it again, I think in a SHTF situation i would rather give up my life trying to help people better prepared and with familys escape a situation (holding the line for want of better words).

But getting back to the subject , I think when SHTF being in a urban area will have a few advantages over being out in the woods, Im pretty sure all the unprepared people will be heading out to the woods

If you have done anything since you have been here it's show a lot of the individuals what a civilized reply is. I applaud you for standing your ground without the usual insults people seem to throw without thinking.

Urban would seem to be better but in my book fewer people would mean less problems. Yet who knows how it will all come down, so far it is all theory. Those who run to the woods and don't know what our woods are like will die off fairly quickly just from bad water.

I tend to think this is not the case. Desperate people (thinking if they're starving and/or near death they're pretty desperate) are going to very aggressive and anything but helpless ...even the Portlandians

I can't see how anyone would stay in the PDX, or Seattle area when the SHTF. Just the small town I live in is crawling with drug addicts, criminals, and lowlifes who manage to keep the town perpetually on the edge of Thunderdome as it is. I just can't see how being in any town larger than a few thousand would be advantageous to anyone.

If we are talking about the end of all state and federal goverment then I believe things will revert back to the way they were hundreds of years ago.
After the "Great Die Off " surivors in the small towns and inter city neighborhoods will become city states.

They will have learnd to work togather. This IMO this will be the biggest problem for the rual folks. These city's will send raiding party's to collect a tax on farms and ranchs. Anyone that does not pay up with produce or live stock would be killed and replaced.

People lived like this for most of history...... why would it be any differnt now.

You can bulid all the cassels with motes and fire breathing dragons you want. But if your not part a large group you will not last.

Ethically palatable to invade a man's private property and murder him because he and his group were better prepared than you?

While I do expect that towns of just a few thousand will ultimately be the most viable size for post-SHTF civilization, I would much rather be in Seattle or Portland, OR than Phoenix, Las Vegas or Los Angeles. At least the Pacific Northwest has water, farm land and a somewhat sparser population. Heck, Las Vegas is gonna be the strangest looking ghost town!

That's understandable, but the deal killer for me would be the assorted two legged wildlife that will be running amok. That and the liberals.

I can not figure out what is going on in this thread... A guy says he has set up his BOL/retreat to be easily defensive and everybody is finding ways to attack him. Survival-ism and self sufficiency go hand in hand. It is a fact that rural areas will not be welcoming refugees from the big cities with open arms when the SHTF. I applaud you Blitzkrieg on your self sufficiency and preparedness.... although I don't want to get shot inadvertently walking onto your property.
