An unpublished Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study confirms Florida State University criminologist Gary Kleck’s findings of more than two million defensive handgun uses (DGUs) per year.

Since the early 1990s, Kleck has maintained that there is a minimum of 760,000 DGUs annually. That is his low estimate; Kleck and research partner Marc Gertz have contended the actual number is closer to 2.5 million.

Kleck reaffirmed his numbers on February 17, 2015, explaining that while plenty of naysayers have criticized his findings, none have been able to offer empirical evidence to counter them.

Now, a CDC study conducted on data from 1996, 1997, and 1998 has been uncovered. The study, which was never released to the public, shows approximately 2.46 million DGUs per year.

    Kleck summarized the CDC findings:

In 1996, 1997, and 1998, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted large-scale national surveys asking about defensive gun use (DGU). They never released the findings, or even acknowledged they had studied the topic. I obtained the unpublished raw data and computed the prevalence of DGU. CDC’s findings indicated that an average of 2.46 million U.S. adults used a gun for self-defense in each of the years from 1996 through 1998 – almost exactly confirming the estimate for 1992 of Kleck and Gertz (1995). Possible reasons for CDC’s suppression of these findings are discussed.

On April 20, 2018, Reason magazine quoted Kleck’s reaction to the unpublished CDC findings; he explained that a figure of 2.46 million DGUs a year “[implies] that guns were used defensively by victims about 3.6 times as often as they were used offensively by criminals.”

They had the data but never reported it. Makes your really wonder who they represent. Were they not allowed to report it? Or they didn't report it since it disproves the facts and goes against their (the left's) agenda/narrative.

Facts get in the way of the agenda once again, can't be having that now, not with all the anti gun legalization on the books or on the drawing boards:oops::eek::mad:
No wonder every one wanted to block the CDC from researhing, could it be their data backs up the FBI data? Naw, that can't be it now, could it?!?!? Funny how all that data gets swept under the rug when the antis are on the rampage, the school's are teaching lies, and our elected claim it false, generated facts!:mad::mad:

Every night tens of millions of Americans have a gun by the bed ready for self defense. How many crimes don't happen in American homes every night because criminals don't know which home has a gun and which doesn't'? I'll bet it's a large number EVERY night.

In 1996 the Dickey Amendment essentially ended all CDC research into gun violence, so the "suppressed" research was suppressed as a result of legislation the NRA wanted enacted.

Actually, the CDC chose not to do any studies, as the Dicky amendment to Public Law 104–208 (the same law that brought us the Lautenberg Amendment) doesn't prohibit the study of "gun violence", it prohibits the advocacy and promotion of gun control.

    Emphasis Mine

My guess to the reason as to why they didn't do any studies on "gun violence" is twofold:
    1. they can't slant the studies to fit their agenda and then use that study to advocate and/or promote gun control and
    2. with murder and shooting rates declining, too many studies will not produce the results they want.

So technically, they can study it all they want, but the anti-gun studies that they want to promote, might bring in an extra bit of scrutiny, which could possibly land a few people in prison if they slanted their findings. If the studies are on the up and up, then no one would have anything to worry about.

Personally, I believe that the Dickey amendment had nothing to do with this study not being released, it had every reason to do with it not fitting the anti-gun agenda.

Exactly. Whenever one hears the "Congress banned the CDC from studying gun violence" -- a deceptive talking point from the anti2A crowd -- it should be pointed out that all the law did was ban marketing disguised as research. If the CDC wanted to do honest and scientifically fair studies, nothing stopped it. That it chose not to do such fair studies and abandon the field altogether speaks volumes.
