My obsession with underhammers began as a way to prevent the copper blast of a cap from going off near my eyes and to make a black powder rifle with as few weak intrusions into a barrel as possible.
I found a great site for what I did (my own renditions were 'along These lines') similar in the most basic ways.

underhammers.blogspot.com

Enjoy.

Underhammer rifles are neat design for sure....I don't have an original one for my collection ...yet.
The have been around since the 1840's...too bad you don't see many out there at rendezvous and shoots....

Just got on website, been off for awhile.

I have 2 underhammers, .50 cal deer creek and .45 buggy rifle.

My
50 is my go too rifle.

Live in Star Idaho.

Thinking of selling my buggy rifle

It seems like an underhammer would have quicker lock time due to the direct path from nipple to charge with no 90 deg bend.
Is this correct?

In theory yes...but a well timed and tuned percussion lock is fast no matter what type...fast enough that you won't be able to tell the difference.
A well timed and tuned flintlock is also very fast.

The direct path is a bit cleaner , than a regular side hammer as well
