This being the case is there an established legal (or otherwise) rational for this seemingly 'pro aggressor' stance as opposed to a self-defense position? And what would be the specific advantage to the legal system by having it?

There would be no advantage. Our legal system, which is allowed to grow and adapt on its own in relation to these kinds of situations, has strong protections for self-defense, because a) it makes sense, b) it's fair and just, and c) it's the natural order of things.
