LOL at gliders, as far as the tarp system is concerned, i was thinking a single person probably 8-9 X 6 so there is room for gear. and a ridge line of about 2.5-3 ft.

12 x12 is big - Does it only come in 12 ft lengths?

no, it comes in 6ft widths cut as long as you like...however integral designs does have an 8x10...i figured id carry the extra couple ounces and got the 10x12 in olive green...especially after spending a couple nights under a 5x8!
