It's a nasty war of devastation. Before the battle lines stagnated, the Russians looted a lot of the areas they initially captured. Apparently including this Maine Coon cat. Which was taken to Belarus from Ukraine, seemingly by retreating Russian soldiers.

In additional to human suffering, who knows how many dogs and cats have been killed or made homeless or have been abandoned of necessesity by their owners.

This is a rare happy story from an unhappy situation. From what I've read, wide-spread looting by Russian forces has been the rule rather than the exception. There is some indication that some of it is officially sanctioned. Like the massive thefts of grain from Ukrainian ports. And transportation of stolen farm machinery back to Russia on military vehicles. Individual Russian soldiers have been frequently reported looting from Ukrainian civilians.

Civil wars are often hard on civilians, especially when one side is backed up by foreign powers... That part of the world seems to be historically cursed by many destructive wars and governments over the centuries...
