Would that 50 watt radio run on a 12 volt mower battery; fed by a trickle charger?

Which antenna did you end up with?

It would run from a fully charged 12 V battery. How long depends on how large the battery is. Trickle charge would not keep up with transmitting though. RX consumption is 0.5 amps with the squelch set, so if the charger could add a bit more than that you would probably be good. A small solar panel? Probably not, at least not here in Oregon, especially during the winter.
