Two shot after dispute over noise in theater - FOX 13 News
A moviegoer lost his life Monday afternoon after a dispute over texting inside a Pasco County theater.

According to the sheriff's office, the dispute happened before the 1:20 showing of 'Lone Survivor' had even gotten underway at the Cobb CineBistro at Grove 16 complex on Wesley Grove Blvd.

Investigators say two couples had gotten into an argument over noise.

"The victim was on his cell phone, he was texting. We believe he was making some kind of noise. This noise led to an altercation between the suspect and the victim," Sheriff Chris Nocco explained.

A witness recalled seeing the agitated man -- later identified by deputies as Curtis Reeves -- get up and leave in an apparent attempt to find a manager. When he came back alone, the argument escalated.

Charles Cummings told FOX 13 he heard the victim say he was texting his 3-year-old daughter before Reeves pulled out a pistol.

"Their voices start going up, there seems to be a confrontation, somebody throws popcorn, then bang, he was shot," said Cummings, who was there to celebrate his birthday. "I heard the victim say, 'I can't believe...,' then he fell on us."

"I asked if the guy was OK, and he started gurgling blood and then fell," recalled Cummings' son, who said he ran to call 911.

Both the man, identified by deputies as Chad Olson, and his wife Nicole were struck by the single shot. Olson was struck in the chest and died, while Nicole was hit in the hand and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

An off-duty Sumter County deputy inside the theater was able to grab the gun and detain Reeves until deputies arrived, the sheriff added.

Reeves, a 71-year-old retired Tampa police officer, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

"It's absolutely crazy it would rise to this level over somebody just texting in a movie theater," Sheriff Nocco offered.

"I can't believe people would bring a gun to a movie," added Cummings, a Marine who served in Vietnam. "I can't believe they would argue and fight and shoot one another over popcorn or even a cell phone."

I guess someone didn't listen to the good Reverend's warning.

This is why you remove the chip off your shoulder and adapt.

You never know if the other guy is a raging loon.

And don't text, talk, or use phones in a movie theater! If you want to do that crap stay home.

No, I'm not justifying shooting someone over this type of behavior but maybe the silver lining is that people will think about being inconsiderate pricks a little more.

I love the NO TEXTING messages at a theater.

To teens, and most idiots, it can't be done.

That is like asking a raging heroin or meth addict to not partake for two hours hahahaha.

The Twittering Twits simply cannot comply. They must be looking down at their phones texting constantly or they will die of an anxiety attack.

Hmmm

Reeves, a 71-year-old retired Tampa police officer, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. A 2005 Tampa Bay Times article also described him as a former director of security for Busch Gardens.

Moments after he was named as the suspect, Tampa police issued a statement saying Reeves had retired back in 1993 as a captain.

"He was instrumental in establishing the department's first Tactical Response Team," the statement explained. "We are not aware of any contact with the department since his departure more than 20 years ago."

"I can't believe people would bring a gun to a movie,"......Hehehe, really?

I never go to movies but if I did I might have more than one sidearm!

More on the shooting now:

Two victims were taken to a Tampa-area hospital. The man later died, but the female victim's injuries weren't considered life-threatening.

WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. — Authorities say a retired Tampa police officer has been charged with fatally shooting a man during an argument over cellphone use at a Florida theater.

Pasco County Sheriff's spokeswoman Melanie Snow says that two couples had been watching "Lone Survivor" Monday at a movie theater in Wesley Chapel, north of Tampa. She says 71-year-old Curtis Reeves asked 43-year-old Chad Oulson to stop texting.

Tobin says the argument led to the shooting. Oulson and his wife, Nichole, were taken to a Tampa-area hospital where he later died. His wife's injuries weren't considered life-threatening.

The sheriff's office says an off-duty Sumter County deputy detained Reeves until police arrived.

Reeves has been charged with second-degree murder. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney.

well, life style have been changed.

nowadays it's hard to see people talking or carry conversation. instead, all they do is stare at their phone screen.

I'm with Eugene there, you have to wonder at the theater's response to the soon-to-be- shooter when he went out looking for "the manager". Looks like it wasn't much.
"Hey there's no manager but would you like some Twinkies?"

I needed a texting phone for communicating due to my hearing impairment and it works great for me, but then again I am a responsible adult and I turn it off when asked to do so.
Now, as for the inconsiderate spawns of satin who are so mesmerized by that tiny screen, they are the problems that technology created!!!

I sure do miss the old days when things were quite simple, you respected your elders, you did what you were told (within reason that you would not be caught red handed) and you were expected home before the street lights came on (before dark if you lived in the sticks like me)....

The 71 year-old shooter was from the old days, even older than ours, and it didn't help. Probably more influenced by PTSD or a fragile ego from not being a big deal anymore like he used to was.
