Trying hunting again

I haven't hunted in nearly 20 years. My dad really wants to teach me some of his skills before he gets to the point where he can't go out anymore. So my question is, what kind of rifle should I be looking for? I would like it to be able to take deer and elk, not break my bank and I don't care if it's used or new.

I'm just trying to gather some information and I know there's lots and lots of knowledge here.
