I know too many friends that as amateur photographers can take very clear nighscape pics with common dlsrs, even cell phones.

Im horrible at photography, I dont understand the settings...

But heres a pic I took of a full moon with just my cell phone and a telescope. (S23 samsung)

Moon is easy. It doesn't move. It's big and bright. Try getting good quality video of airplane which is also big, moving slow and predictably. It's much harder to get a good video, even though that's very easy target. Small and fast moving is really tough. I struggle with birds in flight in bright sun which is really a focus issue not a resolution/clarity/exposure issue like you have at night.

True.
I actually live under a flight path and have been wondering if I could get a clear pic of a plane but its been rainy for weeks now, maybe Ill get a chance tonight.

We just need clear proof though. I dont doubt some were drones, but read the faa loosened rules for flying them at night. Then recently i thi k they put a hold on flights temporarily due to the concerns which probably explains the sudden drop in sightings.

Could be a normal plane or recreational drone.
The reporter said it was about 8-ft. wide but didn't say how far away. It's lit up like an airplane, but he declared it to be a drone. Hard to argue with that kind of logical thinking.

Maybe the penguins have learned how to fly without our knowledge and now they're phooking with us. Makes sense, right? Don't show up on thermal cameras because they're so cold and can outmaneuver any man-made aircraft because of millions of years of evolution chasing anchovies and sardines.

There. I've solved the mystery. Where's my Nobel prize?

I'd settle for an extra-large pizza (Round Table, King Arther Supreme, please).

Personally I think there were military tests using multiple drones first reported right near the army arms development site, then reported further out. Deputy and coast guard in addition to tons of other reported the same thing. 8'ish wide, large numbers, flying in a pattern.

Then as soon as those made the news people started calling everything they see "mysterious drones". IMO Gov response tells us all we need to know. Senators etc who are not in the know whining about "we need to know!" . Military says nothing.

Thats a valid theory too, though I dont see why the govt just couldnt say there will be night training exercises (or some other benign excuse).

Remember the NEOWISE comet about 4 years ago? Motorola Edge+ cellphone, no telescope.

I agree that would be a decent line of reason with any other administration. But this one tried to do the same thing with known foreign intelligence balloons, and someone did get out the telephoto lens to snap some pictures of those.

It took widespread media attention for this administration to admit they knew anything about the issue, let alone take any action. It is well within the realm of the possible that they would take the same action with a foreign drone incursion. Indeed, their prior response to the balloons is the entire foundation for skepticism on their response to this issue.

It is just too bad that drones are so much harder to photograph than balloons, we might have actually been able to apply enough pressure to get some real answers. As it stands the amount of skepticism gives them cover to not address the concerns directly and instead blow them off as "we looked into it, didn't see nuttin." If a more competent administration gave that answer I might be inclined to take it at face value, but this one I do not trust at all. At this point I want them to prove there aren't foreign drones in the sky above our nation, and I don't care how hard it would be for them to prove the negative.

As suspected, the drones were ours, not the enemy's. The White House should have just said that right off the bat.

It was a useful distraction, because until we had a definitive answer it was something that we should have paid attention to. Given the last administration's track record it easily could have been some kind of foreign opp, or shady .gov shenanigans or really anything else. Given that is seems it was just heightened traffic in the region from several approved studies mixed with curiosity it would have been easy for them to state an answer.

But then all the news cycles about it would not have been clogging up the reporting for weeks on end, driving down coverage of other more damning issues. And if the coverage of the drones had started drawing too much heat and criticism from administration-friendly news sources (unlikely since most such sources were ignoring the issue) they could just release a statement to the effect of "Geeze guys, their just approved research drones we have known about all along, why are you wasting our time on this?" and they could make all the people covering it look silly.

Given how quickly this admin came up with the answer I am nearly certain that the decision to not give an answer was deliberate. Whoever was running the show wanted a distraction and this was perfectly good enough.

Goes along with all of the UFO coverage the media was reporting on the last few months of 2024

They came up with AN answer, I have my doubts it is actually THE answer
What I find suspicious is if it is just simple FAA testing then why couldnt the old administration just say the same thing?

Now my tinfoil hat is telling me both administrations are covering something up.

Not just the last admn, the military and FAA said basically the same thing

So on one hand the last admn was so incompetent they couldn't even blow their noses without sharting thier pants but at the same time so skilled as to orchestrate this massive cover up?

:s0156:
"Boss says don't answer questions" is not exactly a cover up. No one is even alleging a conspiracy, just that they refused to give an answer until it would be politically beneficial to do so. This is common when an administration wants to get out in front of an issue but needs to coordinate uniform messaging first. It's just that in most cases it only takes a day or two to get everyone on the same page, not weeks. It is those weeks that makes me think this was being held onto for advantage, and not respecting the rights of the people whom they wish to govern to know what is up.

The only way this gets into full blown conspiracy territory is who made that decision, because I doubt anyone believes it was actually Biden.

If it was just simple FAA testing there was no reason to withhold that from the public. The only reason would be a military exercise which is still plausible that either administration would cover up, at least the Trump admin gave an answer to appease the public unlike the last just built drama appearing clueless.
