Not just because of San Bernardino, or whichever mass shooting may pop up next, but also not not because of those. Don't sort the population into those who might do something evil or foolish or self-destructive with a gun and those who surely will not. As if this could be known—as if it could be assessed without massively violating civil liberties and stigmatizing the mentally ill. Ban guns! Not just gun violence. Not just certain guns. Not just already-technically-illegal guns. All of them. "

People like this are incapable of rational thought, nor of comprehending actual facts and figures. Therefore, their opinion is worthless. Thankfully, we do have a 2nd amendment here and even the average citizen of the US, as blindly stupid as some of them are, would even consider such an extreme measure.

I propose we mandate that all Canadians be required to purchase firearms, then send them to United States citizens. Makes perfect sense to me, and considering it's not backed by any reason or common sense, makes my opinion about as valid as this waste of oxygen.

Actually, she lives on a small ranch just outside Toronto, raising alpacas and llamas. But her main source of income is writing. She has a doctorate degree in French and French studies from New York University. So she can also write well in French.

She is a Liberal Jewish Feminist who loves France and the French people. Sort of a French Wanna Be.

She loves Asian food, especially Japanese, and also loves watching old '70's TV sitcoms. All in the Family and the Mary Tyler Moore Show ( created by liberal Jewish TV producers Norman Lear and James Brooks, respectively ) are her two favorite TV shows. She also likes Woody Allen movies.

She normally does not write about guns or gun control. She is usually obsessed with writing about everything that is French. Did you, officer, have a domestic violence incident at home? Shoot a fleeing person of color over a tail light violation? Get served divorce papers?
Huh, your proximity card no longer works... and that 17 round death machine stays IN the armory. "

You know, I'd just like to see them go ahead and try that last option on any kind of level (more than just the random 'violator'). Let the country see what they're dealing with. Thugs, criminals, lunatics - and I'm talking about the politicians and their jackbooted enforcers that see citizens rights as a non-issue when a paycheck is involved. I suspect the American people would finally draw the line at forced confiscation. Might be an interesting wake up call to people like this gal, when they realize they are actually in a very small minority - and they are not armed.

To some of the comments - she did get published. The New Republic is an actual magazine, with editors and publishers. They might be out there, but they approved her piece. Which tells me there is some traction to this.
Could it be some kind of trial balloon? Maybe for some /leading/ candidate - I wouldn't be shocked. After all they could blame it on Canada, eh.

But what I do think is the majority of voters in Oregon and Washington would not speak out against her position, even if they are liberal gun owners.
