It's more than a little disturbing how certain U.S. politicians will consider the idea of nuking foreign countries to be completely unthinkable, and yet will casually threaten nuking their own citizens.

It's also amusing how these same politicians swagger about the unassailable might and power of the strongest military in the world, while forgetting the American War of Independence, the Vietnam War, and 20+ years in Afghanistan.

Hey, Mr. Politician, how many guns did the Afghani's have in far-away Afghanistan compared to the number of guns owned by U.S. citizens right here on your very doorstep? You should be more circumspect.

Politicians do themselves no favors by threatening half the country. If it actually came down to it ( and I sincerely hope it doesn't, but even so) it won't end well for them. Or, indeed for most of us, either.

Way too serious, you might want to post that here ;):
And on a related note:

I'm old school, give me a P-40E and a full wing load of .50 BMG!

Just provide a machine shop, qualified personnel, loads of money and materials, and I'll come up with some weird ideas.... like an armed version of this Nord N500 prototype

Or a modernized version of the CL-84 artifact-canadair-cl-84-1-dynavert.jpg

Or...
Stick a 25mm/30mm chain gun turret on a larger quadrotor....

1) That must be why the US has such a great record for prevailing over non-peer adversaries who don't have fighter jets and nukes. How many high tech air superiority fighters and nukes do the Taliban have? After a 20 effort they have run us out after doing the same to the Russians. I made the acquaintance of an Afghani when I worked at MDAC, and if he was any example I can see why nobody has conquered the place.

2) The only weapon system that can take and hold territory is a person with a rifle. That's why ARs in the hands of We the Peons has them in such an uproar. That's why 2A is there in the 1st place.

My absolute favorite military plane. What an amazing platform. And for a gun guy, a plane that was literally built around a gun is hard not to like. Great to see that it's getting some new gear.
Every time they try to come up with it's replacement, they end up designing basically the same damn thing!
Smart money would have been to build new ones with the needed upgrades they wanted, would have saved a bunch of time and headache's, and a bunch of money!

And the new one always costs 10x or 100x more.

Which reminds me, what's the most popular item at the nerd bar? An order of magnitude. :)

Northrop's Tacit Blue AKA Alien Schoolbus. Battlefield surveillance stealth aircraft, carried a big-arsed sensor package which ended up being mounted in the Boeing J-8 J-STAR aircraft.
From the wikipedia entry on it..
  • Crew: 1
  • Length: 55 ft 10 in (17.02 m)
  • Wingspan: 48 ft 2 in (14.68 m)
  • Height: 10 ft 7 in (3.23 m)
  • Airfoil: Clark Y mod.[11]
  • Gross weight: 30,000 lb (13,608 kg)
  • Powerplant: 2 × Garrett ATF3-6 turbofan engines, 5,440 lbf (24.2 kN) thrust each
Performance

  • Maximum speed: 250 kn (290 mph, 460 km/h)
  • Service ceiling: 25,000–30,000 ft (7,600–9,100 m) operating altitude

Versus the A-10C
  • Crew: 1
  • Length: 53 ft 4 in (16.26 m)
  • Wingspan: 57 ft 6 in (17.53 m)
  • Height: 14 ft 8 in (4.47 m)
  • Wing area: 506 sq ft (47.0 m2)
  • Airfoil: NACA 6716 root, NACA 6713 tip
  • Empty weight: 24,959 lb (11,321 kg)
  • Gross weight: 30,384 lb (13,782 kg)
CAS mission: 47,094 lb (21,361 kg)
    Anti-armor mission: 42,071 lb (19,083 kg)
  • Max takeoff weight: 50,000 lb (22,700 kg) [196]
  • Internal fuel capacity: 11,000 lb (4,990 kg)
  • Powerplant: 2 × General Electric TF34-GE-100A turbofans, 9,065 lbf (40.32 kN) thrust each
Performance

  • Maximum speed: 381 kn (439 mph, 706 km/h) at sea level, clean[195]
  • Cruise speed: 300 kn (340 mph, 560 km/h)
  • Stall speed: 120 kn (138 mph, 220 km/h) [197]
  • Never exceed speed: 450 kn (518 mph, 833 km/h) at 5,000 ft (1,500 m) with 18 Mk 82 bombs[198][195]
  • Ferry range: 2,240 nmi (2,580 mi, 4,150 km) with 50 knot (55 mph, 90 km/h) headwinds, 20 minutes reserve
  • Service ceiling: 45,000 ft (13,700 m)
  • Rate of climb: 6,000 ft/min (30 m/s)
  • Wing loading: 99 lb/sq ft (482 kg/m2)
  • Thrust/weight: 0.36

So. Perhaps the same techniques of the stealthier aircraft's fuselage, coupled with maybe a much beefier, stronger wing, as well as much more powerful engines?
Internal missile/bomb bays to the sides of the 30mm Gatling? Keep similar armoring in cockpit? The fuselage on the Tacit Blue demonstrator looks nearly twice the width of the A-10C. That to me indicates perhaps plenty of space in the fuselage for hidden weapons bays...? Maybe could keep the same short wing but add survivability like the A-10's....

I bet you could build new A10's with mostly the old design, updated for moderate stealth, modern sensors, and using new but not outrageously expensive materials and have an amazing plane for not a quarter the cost of an F35.

Tooling is pretty much all gone for the old A-10 stuff due to Fairchild Republic being now defunct. Northrop is still in the game, so Northrop-Grumman or Northrop-Boeing ( ) would likely be the best candidates.
Which was why I jumped to the Alien Schoolbus/Tacit Blue design as a jump point
