Hey all. Was just thinking this and would like to hear the thoughts of others.

I never used TikTok, and quite honestly despised it. Originally I was very much so open to it being banned, but after really thinking about it I realized that TikTok being banned may not be as awesome as it seems. It seems more so to me that with TikTok being banned, the government has the power to ban things it doesnt like, which certainly doesnt seem to bode well for our personal freedoms. Now maybe Im looking into this a bit much, but who knows. You give the government an inch, they will take a mile.

I've never used it in any capacity. I don't care about it.

I don't believe in bans. The US government has no business telling us what media platform we wish to engage with.

People should of course be careful of who they do decide to do business with, but ultimately, the consequence is theirs to deal with.

I haven't followed it too carefully, but it doesn't seem there have been any actual confirmed accounts of espionage within Tiktok.

This feels a lot like a magazine ban.

If you're really wanting to use it, a VPN tunnel to an endpoint outside the US will get you in, unless Tiktok requires location permissions on devices capable.

Just more government control and over reach in the name of "safety."

This is coming from someone who doesn't have any social media.

Well.

TikTok's owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company. There is the issue of China's laws requiring Chinese companies to hand over any and all data they get over to the Chinese Government, if the government requests it. That's one of the major reasons that the Federal lawmakers passed the ban.. one of the other reasons being the refusal of ByteDance to release or allow investigation into it's proprietary algorithms used on the platform.

So.. yeah. China a supporter for "freedom of speech"? :s0064:

GAF... It gives the powers that be something to fuss with, maybe they'll forget about DJI turning off geofencing of their drones.

As an aside, I don't recall ever hearing anything or seeing anything about guns or pro2A content on TikTok anyhow :s0140: then again......that's what Instagram, Rumble, and X are for? :s0140:

No company I know of, are truly for freedom of speech, or truly for unlimited 2A rights for all in US

DJI geofencing was a DJI thing not mandated by FAA regs, turning it off not only aligns more closely with US laws and it also opens the door for more FAA control

What was that line about thievery? "Don't steal, the government hates competition?" :s0140:

The cynic in me is thinking maybe the reason the Federal govt banned TikTok, is because they couldn't ensure that they could get the data of the users on the platform from the Chinese government or even from ByteDance, and thus, they couldn't be sure that the data for the American citizens on TikTok would be exclusively available to the Federal government?

After all, "National Security" concerns.

Can't really have full Freedom of Speech without a robust right to personal data privacy, nor can we have full unrestricted 2A right without the same (coughs, NFA and FFL/4473 info).

IDGAF if they ban TikTok. I don't use it. Zuckerberg May have a "come to Jesus" moment in the morning when he wakes up. He'll be singing Hallelujah. Really, the only social media I ever follow are X because of Musk and Trump, and this forum and the Sig forum, and I am a moderator on a guitar forum.

When my wife shared TikTok videos to me through Meta Messenger and it persistently required me to literally become a TikTok user... That's when I figured that something was coming. a platform that requires other users to sign up and become members of that particular platform in order to view any content... Does not have privacy as a rule ;) edit, if it doesn't allow off-platform anonymous users to view it's content ....

The same goes for Instagram, X/Twitter and likely Facebook.

I'm always concerned about the slippery slope element. Like if they ban Tik Tok, what might they try to ban next?

But with that said, China is a major threat and our number one enemy/adversary. Why on earth would we a) give them a direct propaganda line into the hearts and minds of our citizens and particularly our youth, and b) give them access to our citizen's data that could be used in all sorts of ways that are harmful to us?

So I say ban it.

They shut down their American servers because of the ban. I don't use Tiktok, but I agree with the freedom of speech and access to information that it provided. My biggest concern with the whole situation is the fact that all media outlets and social media platforms are being controlled by the government. Any time there's a viable source of information that they can't control, they shut it down. Zuckerberg just bought his way in, and if they bring Tiktok back, it's only because they're contracting with Meta. The only source of information we will have access to will be owned by Presidents Musk and Zuckerberg aside from the already corrupted media broadcasting organizations we've had access to for decades. We only get the news they want us to see, nothing more from an outside perspective.
