I'm lucky - not only is my usual doc a very fine wing shooter, he is a former Royal Marine. He does NOT hold with this stuff in any way, shape or form. The above, BTW, came from the numpties in Police Scotland, but is general.

I only know of like two civil wars, but it seems like you guys need a third...

Is it true that boxes of fried chicken have knife violence warnings on them there?
I'm sorry to see such decline of such a great nation, my condolences.

I can't answer your question about boxes of fried chicken, as it is not anything that I am familiar with. However, the likelihood of civil war happening here again is exceedingly slim. Not enough guns in the hands of the ordinary Joe, y'see.

Didn't say it would happen, just that it may set your government straight.

I was just thinking about the recent vote and then realized things in the UK may be different then I'm reasoning in my head.

So instead I'll ask, do conservatives tend to be more pro firearm ownership in general there like they are here? And do you think this election result means any hope in hell for loosening up things like this and providing more liberty?

My wife and I will just stick to visiting the UK in VR for now... Less rude remarks and I can do it with a loaded firearm strapped to my side. We originally planned to have our honeymoon in Scotland but... Wife doesn't want to anymore. I'm sure it's not as bad as you read in the news but, it never is.

Hell half the people I met when traveling were scared to visit the US because they were afraid of getting shot. I had to keep replying that it's still statistically very rare. And they will probably be fine if they just stick to the areas outside the bad parts of the city.

Most American of my acquaintance have a VERY unrealistic view of the UK, and seem to imagine that it is a mix of Benny Hill, Faulty Towers, Monty Python and Hell without guns, is equal parts.

The FIRST thing you have to get out of your mind is that the terms used to describe politics here are totally different from anything that you use in the USA. Here, Conservatives tend, note that I said tend, to be those with a profession behind them, their own businesses, or better educated for reasons that are very hard to determine [simply because the education system here is also quite different to yours, which most here find completely alien and VERY hard to comprehend]. the Labour party was born out of the trade unions in the early part of the last century, and was and still is, based on a mild form of Socialism that many here find an acceptable alternative to the Conservatives, whom they view as snooty, upper-class folks with little connection with real life. Plainly untrue, in my case, as I had a hard upbringing, had to WIN a place at a good school by virtue of examination results, and had parents with no money for fripperies like a place of their own.
The Liberals, now called the Liberal Democrats, are so removed from reality as to be a farce - as their showing the other night clearly demonstrated. Pulling OUT of the BREXIT deal was NOT the way to restore confidence in the political decision-making process, and they will pay for it by living in oblivion for the next many years.

Remember, too, that only ONE party gets to make policy in the UK parliament - FIRST past the post with the most. All others are losers.

As for the politics of firearms ownership here in UK, I really have no idea of the demographic of politics-v-gun-ownership. Bear in mind that any owning of guns here is not a cheap pastime by any means, you might have reasons to expect that gun-owners might be more inclined, politically, to the Conservative platform. However, I am a member of a gun club with over 420 paid-up members, and although none are what you might call poverty-stricken, there are some for whom it is considerably easier a financial burden to bear than others.

I'm not clear what you problems are about visiting UK, especially Scotland. You make it seem like you are being asked to drive an open-topped car around the 'hood in Detroit late at night. What IS the problem? I've lived here on and off for 73 years, and I've never SEEN a crime being committed, never been stabbed or shot, or mugged, or robbed, or burglarised - but then, I don't tend to make my home in an area known for criminal activities from black or other gangs - mostly inner cities, I'm told. In fact, as I've mentioned before, in the 3000 or so folks that live in our twin village there are, TMK, only four black people, all US servicemen, and their families whom I presume, are also black - can't really say, since I've never seen them.

Hell half the people I met when traveling were scared to visit the US because they were afraid of getting shot. I had to keep replying that it's still statistically very rare. And they will probably be fine if they just stick to the areas outside the bad parts of the city.

Again, I have no idea what kind of people you met when travelling, so I can't speak for them, but you are making a mistake judging the people of the UK by a chance remark form a snowflake visitor who may never have seen a real gun in their entire lives. You should really feel sorry for them.

Does that answer you?

tac, From what I've read 'Brexit' has passed - think the lefty pols will listen to the vote?

The 'lefty pols' have neither choice nor say. Unlike your system, the opposition here has to sit and glare and suck it up - THEY lost. the new government here has FIVE whole years to make good on their promises. The opposition might as well all live in another country. 80% of their committed, lifelong hardliner voters, particularly in the industrial NE, traditional home of hard-line Labour supporters,v oted for the Conservatives. What a smack in the gob.

The Government is committed to BREXIT, that's how they got back in by a crushing margin. So there WAS effectively a Second referendum - the general election of last Thursday, and the Labour party got the worst thrashing since 1935, the Lib Dems were shot out of the water and may have disappeared completely, and the rest are 'so-what-ers.

tac,

Thanks for your response.

From what I understand, Brexit came about as a revolt against European hegemony.

Do I understand correctly?

The UK got totally pissed-off being told what to do and how to do it by a bunch of wonkers who had the temerity to TELL the UK what to do and how to do it. And charge $50M a day for the privilege.

Uh, what's to explain? Don't you have similar locations in the US? Don't answer that, of course you do.

Quote - 'The Laredo website reads: "We are a group of living historians/re-enactors who re-create the American wild west.'

I seem to recall that the US finds 'Renaissance Fairs' filled with knights in armour, fair damsels, troubadours and so on quite a hoot.
