** As of Feb 27, 2017 I'll be working on the user interface & experience design for the app. If you are interested in following the app design, all live updates will be pushed to RangeBuddy.

** As of March 4, 2017 I'll be starting to code a live prototype of the designs I have made. I'll likely do a private beta test once it is built to get some feedback.

Keep in mind, the app name & logo will most likely change or be updated. They're placeholders for now.

So.. I've been thinking about mocking up some designs for a mobile application for firearm enthusiasts to network and socialize. Would you be interested in using something like this on your iPhone (and android, later..) ?

Some features to give you an idea:
  • Incorporate ranges across the US. (ex: post pictures of your day at the range, review the range, etc.)
  • Nearby FFL's (ex: Get a feel for which FFL's have the best reputation, reviews, etc. in your area.)
  • User Profiles (ex: Username, Firearms, Ranges you have been to & how you did for each recorded day at that range, etc.)
  • Nearby Ranges (ex: Shows nearby ranges; each range will have a list of formatted posts - each are different users posting pictures, stats, etc. about their day at that range. These posts will show on a users profile for each time they record a day at the range.)
  • Firearms (ex: User's, if willing, can post images & statistics of their firearms OR they can anonymously post photo's of their firearms.)
Here's what WOULD NOT happen:
  • Your device will NEVER request access to the GPS to track you. (For your user profile you will enter your zip code and that is all that is tied to your account in terms of location services.)
  • You are NOT REQUIRED to provide any personal information. (You will login with a username & password, with an email to verify users and recover account passwords. This allows you to remain as anonymous as you'd like.)

Keep in mind, this is just off of the top of my head for now. If there is a decent amount of people who are interested in something like this, I would not mind building a prototype and doing a beta test, launching the app, etc.

Let me know what you think!

Cheers,
Zach

Now I don't do social media anymore. I am definitely not someone who could be termed as a Luddite (used to be very involved with Defcon and hacker stuff in general), but I can see this being used by thieves and the government (but I repeat myself ) to appropriate firearms that don't belong to them. Now the same thing can be said about posting pictures of your guns anywhere on line but I'd imagine adding the social networking style of data collection and sharing it would be quite a bit easier for someone to identify individual users, their locations and possibly when it would be a good idea to visit their homes and appropriate their stuff. Fast forward a few years your app could be used as a tool to aid in confiscation by a government that has decided we can no longer be trusted to own certain weapons.

Just a couple concerns I'd have. Plus seriously Iphone first and Android later ? Screw apple (screw Google as well but screw apple with a slightly sharper, rustier pole)

Not to be to much of a smart azz ... But don't we already have an app for this?...
I think its called : northewestfireams.com .

This site is a "Social Media Site" ... unless you ain't very nice or social ...:D

Zach, thanks for stopping by to ask. You'll probably find that firearms enthusiasts, generally speaking, aren't eager to share that type of information publicly. That's just been my experience though. Since I don't own any guns I probably wouldn't find an app like that of much use.

We are all to wary to go for your nefarious scheme to illegally confiscate our firearms and send our children to the work camps!!!

Hi Zach, welcome!

As you can see firearms people are a interesting bunch.

Here's the problem with your idea. 2A supporters and firearms enthusiasts are constantly worried about keeping our rights and constantly worried about history repeating itself as most liberal/socialist countries tend to move towards banning weapons and confiscation.

I think the general idea is a great one, However, you would have to make it so firearms owner are anonymous with personal info.

Having an app that incorporates local ranges, gunsmiths, FFLs, along with places to buy supplies/ammo and current pricing (if possible) would be highly useful.

And I would imagine the payback from advertising would be a good one from like minded companies.

Good like and Thanks for thinking about the 2A crowd.

I thought it would be an interesting way to network on a relevant platform for gun enthusiasts. Here on the forum, people don't mind sharing photos of their guns and 90% of them have their town/city listed.

I could see how no one would use it though - out of fear of what may happen if the feds got ahold of such information.

Thank you for your constructive advice! I will revise my initial idea and move in this direction!

With the forum people list pics and usually their general area. With movile technology I think most fear (and probably rightfully so) that other users would be able to see/find their physical address.

I 'm not really afraid of the feds knocking, but more so of the bad guy kicking my door in when I'm at work.

As far as "bad guys" are concerned, unless they are feds (then maybe), they would not have access to our database. Also, your home location would never be recorded by the application. Rather, you would enter the county, city, state, etc. similar to the forums. Therefore, even if they did access our database, the information would never have been recorded in the first place :)
