As I recall, the downside was that those lasers required a dedicated aircraft of considerable size, were slow to recharge, and that anti-missile missiles were deemed more practical?
These used dedicated generators off each of the jets Turbines, supposedly, they drove an electric motor inside the jet someplace that had a great big fly wheel and electromagnetic brake that would instantly charge a gang of super capacitors so it could charge/recharge in just seconds, just took up a bunch of space and weight, and extra fuel to drive the gen sets!

Trying to remember back, I think the Fly Wheel was a sort of super magneto that ether charged the capacitors, or triggered them, I only remember a little of it, and it seems like it had to be spun at a certain speed and then stopped very quickly in order to "Fire" the laser! We were read into the program only as much as if the plane were to go down, we might need to know how to salvage or destroy components of it!

Great, even more weapons that they can turn around and use against the domestic population if we don't obey. And if anybody here knows their history we know full well that this government at times are more than happy to employe weapons against its own people (Waco). And with a certain somebody's speech the other day about "all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC" wink wink, we all know what/who he's talking about here now don't we.

Used to use a CNC laser that was 6mev that could cut up to 1/4" steel. What good would a 300kw laser do on the battlefield? Laser target designator? Something to range and target better?
Normal engraving lasers are in the 20-50 watt range. A 300 Watt laser will cut through thin steel but It will certainly screw up com devices and it will run all day long . It will also burn equipment and kill . 50KW? Thats going to leave a mark.

Would all that spinning up and rapid deceleration of a flywheel make it fly funny?
