stumbled upon something I never knew before today and how much this impacted pistols today, the telescoping bolt invented by John Browning.

This feature reduces the required length of a weapon such as a submachine gun significantly, and it allows rifle designs to be balanced around the pistol grip in a way that gives "pointability" similar to a pistol's.

This also explains why the 1911 has such a natural "pointability", genius...
