These discussions are so tough. It's hard not to apply the solution before you can accurately identify the problem. SHTF is like the F word, it can be used for nearly anything.

Take these two case studies: One is a guy who lived through Argentinas 2001 financial collapse, another is a guy who lived through a year long seige in Bosnia in the 90's.

SURVIVING IN ARGENTINA (Fernando Aguirre, Buenos Aires Argentina)
SHTF School - Real Life Survival Experiences ("selco", somewhere in the balkans)

In the argentine case, "survival" was about surviving hyper-inflation and rampant (very rampant) crime. Having physical gold and silver (in most cases against the law) was a stroke of incredible fortune. Having burglar bars, a pistol and training on how to use it was just as important. Head-lamps with batteries for when the power went out, a good canner, a good skill-set to moonlight and/or barter since your salary was essentially just cut by 75% due to inflation.

In the Balkan case you're talking about people peeling bark from what trees have not been cut down for firewood and scraping the slimy stuff on the inside to eat. Any house that looked like there was anything of value would eventually come under attack. Walking alone at night was near certain suicide. Physical gold & silver was mostly useless. Drugs & sanitation products were worth 10x their weight in gold.

I would say in the first scenario wilderness survival skills were of pretty limited value all-in-all. I would say in the second scenario they could save your life.

If you are certain you will never be faced with a situation similar to the second scenario, don't bother to learn any of the skills of the indiginous people who lived here before us.
