I don't want to step on anyone's feet, but has anyone noticed that most if not all gun control comes from Democrats? Does anyone remember a gun control bill being sponsered by or submitted by a Republican or a Libertarian? I am only curious, I know a lot of pro-gun Democrats and just as many anti-gun Republicans.

Yes, if you do a websearch you can find tons of legislation on state and federal level that has been created, sponsored, or co-sponsored by republican candidates. Most does come from more liberal sources since they have a different base to whom they must pander.

The right wing does a lot more lip service towards gun rights but that is about all it is...lip service. They were in control of congress for 12 years and congress and the Whitehouse for 8 years. Where was all the pro-gun legislation during these times? Letting a law passed by Clinton expire for political reasons is not much of a favor.

No party in Washington wants an armed population. It took the courts to provide us with the few victories we have won over the past years. That is where our greatest chance of victory comes from now...the courts. Not from two faced politicians from any party.

That is why I am more liberal than conservative on social views. The neo-cons have done a great deal trying to weaken the court systems (think about all their "activist judge" rhetoric) and the rule of law. At least the liberal factions want the courts strong and functional. A strong court system is our greatest chance at righting the wrongs of the past couple decades.

I tend to be more Libertarian myself. About the only good thing to come out of the Bush presidency was the appointment of conservative Supreme Court Justices. Remember, the Heller Decision was only decided by the slimest of margins. The liberal Justices all opposed that decision. That ballance could easily change with the next Supreme Court appointee.

Yeah I know what you mean, and it's really annoying, the herd-like lockstep both parties parade around in. Normal people aren't like that, and I wish they would come off of it. Not likely though.

This interests me. Please provide some links as to anti-gun legislation being sponsored, co-sponsored, etc. by Republicans. Other than that fellow from Rhode Island I am at a loss as to what you mean.

Thanks in advance for your efforts!

FWIW I'm a free-market, anti-socialism, Libertarian kind of person with fiscal conservative values, in case anyone wanted to profile me or my curiosity-

"Tons" of legislation may be a bit of an overstatement, but I'm certain there are republican representatives who have signed on to (everyone say it with me) ..."common sense"... gun laws. I can't help with the research because I would only make a note of it if I saw one of MY reps doing it. Thus far, the only anti-gun local politicians have been democrat (as far as I know).

Fortunately, our state constitution pre-empts a lot of liberal jackassery at the local level (cue Mayor Nickels).

It has been my experience that people on forums that ask for such information instead of looking it up themselves do not really want to be told anything.

You might want to do a simple search of the words "anti-gun legislation, republican sponsor" and you will be amazed at how much information you find yourself needing to read through. That is if you actually bother to try and find the truth.

Here is a small hint. You might want to look at all the state level legislation sponsored by republicans regarding states being able to seek damages from gun manufacturers.

You can also start reading here...http://www.strike-the-root.com/3/powers/powers2.html...and then work you way out from there.

Before you start swallowing all the tripe handed to you by the far right wing about how "gun friendly" they are, you might want to start thinking for yourself and looking at the facts. Just where is all this "gun friendly" legislation from the past 12 years? Where are the victories from pro-gun republican political actions? Why have all the victories come from the court system and not these gun loving conservatives?

You would serve yourself well to remember neither political party is "on your side" and that it is up to the individual and the right of law to win this fight. If you start voting for hard line freedom destroyers like Bush and Cheney because you think they care at all about your gun rights you are going to wake up very surprised and unhappy one day. The best chance we have as a community is to ensure our voices can still be heard, that we have access to legal scrutiny and justice, and that we present a good example to the public.

Actually, you are quite wrong in my case. Nevertheless, thank you for the Powers link, it is indeed a different perspective and an apparent good place to start.

Trophy post right there! Thanks! I know that many here think the ACLU is a bunch of wankers as they are so weak sauce on the 2nd amendment, but the ACLU and the NRA both need our support right now more than ever. You all know the issues on guns, and if you haven't joined the NRA, do it now. http://www.nra.org/

Check this as well. http://www.aclu.org/ Some scary stuff there. All of your phone calls are being recorded all the time right now. Every single one! You call your mom, the Gov't is monitoring that call...just because. The ACLU challenged that, it's a lot like having the Gov't inside your home to watch your daily life....well...just because. Can cameras inside your home be far behind audio monitoring? A friend of mine say that they can monitor sounds inside the homes remotely via the telephone wires right now and they do it all the time....just because. No wiretap needed. They monitor all email and computer transmissions as well. Probably this post too. The ACLU challenged this illegal wiretapping, and a judge said they did not have standing as they had not been negatively affected by it. So the gov't will wiretap you all day long, and if they get info that is damaging, then they will get a judge to issue a wiretap and charge you with only that info captured legally.

Bush has the power to lock up any American right now...just because...without a trial...for as long as he wants...life if he so chooses. No lawyer, no court system, you will never be able to challenge your accusers: ever. That it has only happened to one person isn't cause for celebration. This is not the principals our country was founded under. This crap needs to be challenged and overcome. Read the ACLU link for some of the many "rights" we have had yanked in the last 8 years.

I consider myself a patriot. I swore an oath to uphold the constitution when I joined the Army. I didn't swear an oath to Richard Nixon, the pres then. Damn good thing too, for it turned out he was a criminal, and got caught red handed and then lied about it before resigning in disgrace. So I don't owe any allegiance to Obama, or Bush...for the same reasons. It's about the country. It's about the rule of law and the constitution. It's about leaving a strong framework for our children and our childrens children.....
