Oh she knew full well what they were saying. That she was able to come up with that lie, and say it like she believed it? That's why I say she is missing out. She could be a Press Secretary for Brandon. Lord knows the one he has now is almost as bad at her job as Brandon is at his. At least Brandon has the excuse that he has dementia and does not know any better. Not sure what excuse she gives at the end of every one of her performances. The people in charge have to be laughing and crying at the same time at how bad it really is.
