I was at a garage sale over the summer and picked up a book called "The Coming World Crisis." It talks at length about the coming hard times, economic collapse and WAR! It also promises that soon the world will plunge into unprecedented turmoil. The author warns that these will be painful and difficult times for all and that we must take action NOW! The cover is replete with marching armies, guys in turbans, tanks and a fallen Statue of Liberty.

And it was written in 1980.

It does give me great perspective though. People have been talking about the end of the world since the beginning of the world. While I'll continue to prepare, I no longer panic. And while I pay attention to the news I continue to work my plan. This post has no other message than that. I hope you're doing the same.

Yep. I don't sweat it or bat an eye. Even the Mayan Calendar thing. I didn't even care too look it up to see if it had any merit. It was an "email" I got a month from December that had a cartoon of the issue that explained it perfectly and made me realize what all the fuss was about (guy ran out of room on his rock calendar and his buddy looked at him and said, someday that's going to freak someone out).

Never hurts to be prepared though. But I'm not building an underground bunker and living in it full time while eating cat food to "get used to" the "coming collapse" conditions.

I vaguely remember that book along with a few others that were bedtime reading for the members of a 'militia' group I interfaced with about that time in Redmond, OR. I was only a teenager but even then I was skeptical about following their radical opinions and beliefs.

Totally get that. First there was "Late Great Planet Earth", then "Prophecy for the Eighties (by the same author) then all the people on Art Bell (Ed Dames, et al.) Don't even get me started on Nostrodamus! I prep because it's prudent. And because of my upbringing. Funny thing though; if my wife of the time had let me buy the silver I wanted to in '03, I would have been buying it at $3/oz!!! Oh well...there's a reason I'm single:s0155:

There have been "prophecies" and theory books written about nearly every plausible doomsday scenario going back into the 1960's. Many of these have been dominated by nuclear war, nuclear exchange, and as the soviet threat tapered off it became other things like terrorism (including nuclear), economic collapse, global pandemics, war, etc. The thing about it is, for as much effort as people put into these treatise, none of them have happened. Just as people can see broad parallels between apocryphal literature in any time, there are plenty of people who were convinced the world was going to fall apart in the 1890s.

The lesson from history, be prepared, even if it doesn't happen, you will be prepared for when it is.

Agree in not panicking. However, the future is very likely to have less real government services, more inflation, and more moral diversity within our population. Those trends continue.

How that will affect us is uncertain, but here's one upside:

Alot of these dip-sticks find it easier to write a book about the end of times than rather facing the cold hard facts that life sucks, they have no meaning in anybody else's life and can't get a job that entitles them to live self-deserved life of luxury.

Tiny apocalypses happen all the time. Katrina, the massacre in Rwanda, the tidal wave/nuclear disaster/fire/flood in Japan, et cetera. Remember that an earthquake/subsequent tidal wave killed hundreds of thousands in Indonesia. War is always happening somewhere. We live in a place that is resource rich, comparatively prosperous, and has experienced peace for an incredibly long time. There are always things to complain about, but realistically, we live in paradise. It may not last forever.

Mount St. Helen's eruption wasn't so bad. We haven't had a nasty earthquake in centuries. Invading armies don't occupy our homes.

On the other hand, some of the systems that hold our paradise together are fragile, interdependent, neglected, and without adequate failsafes.

I am a believer in the possibility of local apocalypses. Doesn't hurt to plan on helping as many people around you as you can if one happens to land in your lap. If you told an American that he would be spied on much more than East German citizens were by the Stazi 30 years ago, it would be too absurd to accept. We are, and it doesn't matter to us. If you were to tell an East German 30 years ago that it doesn't matter that the gov't can record nearly every correspondence and purchase he makes, that East German would not accept your position, because it is absurd.

I worry about slow dehumanization, about the reduction of inalienable rights, about great numbers of people not having opportunities to fulfill their potential as human beings. Could be we are in some sort of great disaster in this moment, but have difficulty recognizing it since we are in the middle of it.

Be prepared to survive, but be prepared to survive as an honorable human being. That can take some real work in a crisis.

Apocalypses happen all the time.

This is much of what I try to communicate to people here all the time... We have the luxury of worrying about the golden BB, most places in the rest of the world don't worry about the golden BB, because it's going to be the malaria, the dysentery, starvation, or political unrest that are happening all around them that kicks them back into the mud every time they try to get up.

Be prepared, by all means, be prepared, but be ready to be sorely disappointed when you find out you're not the last man on earth, and your life will be about hard work and rebuilding, not about being the protagonist in a zombie apocalypse movie.

Yes. And it always happens that way. Only a small percentage of people recognize it when paradigm-changing events are occuring. And even a smaller percentage will act ahead of time because doing so means going against crowd psychology. I've never understood how someone can wander off the cliff with the rest of the lemmings when the cliff is obvously right in front of them, but for most people the need to "fit in" trumps critical thinking.

Chances of an outright collapse are very small. What you can count on is the politicians and the bansters to stealthly steal more of your money through inflation and new and more restrictive laws and regulations.

In 1980 minimum wage was $3.10 per hour. Today it is $7.25.
According to measuringworth.com you need to make between $7.36 and $16.80 to retain the purchasing power of $3.10 from 1980. Using the official .gov CPI that amount is $8.46.
We all know that the gov massages the CPI to make it lower than it really is.
Let's face it, the normal people are getting screwed in few different ways.
Hack, if in 1980 you saved 1000 hours worth of your earnings and bought land with it ($3,100)
and sold that land for 1000 hours of min wage earning today, you'd get $7,250.
In the eyes of the government you have made a $4,150 profit and they will tax you on it.
That is a stealth tax, and it is a nasty way to screw the people.

Chances of an outright collapse are very small.

= Normalcy Bias defined. We have the worst balance sheet on the planet and are being propped up temporarily by a printing press. The collapse of the dollar and our economy is a mathematical certainty. There is no way around it. It may be tomorrow. It may be ten years from now.

Whenever the money masters are ready, and have protected their interests; only then will they pull the plug and send us into the sewer. Problem (the crash they create); Reaction (panic, helplessness, fear); solution (new much lower living standard, but for 'the good of the world;' a new world bank and currency; new world gov, love and unity, more control for the Oligarchs, less of everything for you).

Back in the 19880's I lived in Australia and met a guy that was lamenting Oz's socialist goverment.
I looked around and saw over the counter sales of suppresors and liberal gun laws in most states, open shooting regulations and the like and so dismissed his assertions. Less than 10 years later the Australian PPl are disarmed, emasculated slaves.
Enslavement is a Progressive Crisis

There's no way anyone could logically discredit the book or anyone else's predictions of a collapse by looking at America by itself; that would be deductive reasoning IMO.

I won't bore anyone with a bunch of statistics that would show how much better off we are than most of the planet because we already know most of the planet is still in a pre-industrial stage (most likely pastoral). And we have people dying over "air Jordans" and "Black Friday" specials here in America.....

I didn't read the book mentioned by the OP, but I bet the author was lamenting over the end of the American/Western Industrial Age; as we currently know this is true. We are in fact in a Post Industrial Era, and there are few examples in history that didn't end in collapse.

What comes after an Industrial age?

Anyone know?

Look at Italy, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Ireland, France....for those who would take heed, we are doing the exact same thing they are; spend, spend, spend, damn Keynesians!.

Coupled with a future energy policy that will be based largely at the perils of the weather, we will have to make even more modifications to our life-styles.

My idea of "collapse" can be illustrated by the struggle to protect what is mine from the government & the other re-distributors, getting decent whole foods, the healthcare I pay for, clean water, keeping the heavy metals and the "ABG" rays out of my thyroid glands, putting up with a state-run media.

Look at the government enterprise architectures (EA); ever wonder why the government always wins? We have public-union employees counting ballots....hello?

Having to defend my God-given rights to defend myself, getting back our Miranda Rights.

It's already here.
