Did you guys hear about this? I can't stop chuckling over this.

Apparently the international space station got hit with a micrometeorite which caused the station to spring a 2 mm hole. :s0001:

Sounds pretty serious, right? Well it kinda is. If they hadn't discovered the hole they would have run out of oxygen in 18 days.

So how did they fix this hole you ask?

It was probably something pretty high tech, right? Something specifically designed for repairing billion dollar space installations, right?

Nope.

How do we plug any type of hole in this world?

Well first the astronaut stuck his finger over the hole. And then for the more permanent solution he broke out...the...DUCT TAPE! :s0112::s0114:

International Space Station astronauts plug leak with finger and tape after being hit with debris
The damage was found by closing hatches to each module one at a time, and European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Alexander Gerst initially plugged the gap with his finger, before duct taping over the hole to prevent more air leaking into space.

During a live feed from the ISS, Nasa's ground control were heard to comment: "Right now Alex has got his finger on that hole and I don't think that's the best remedy for it."

their description is that it is like a rural sign -
or something hit by bird shot

lots o' dings.

SPACE: NASA Detects Small Leak on the ISS – and the Russian Crew Is Fixing It With Rags and Junk. "The station is regularly hit by micrometeorite debris; spacewalking astronauts report that after nearly 20 years aloft, the exterior hull looks as if it was hit by birdshot."

just a random image from the net to illustrate the point.

A lot of misconception about the lack of pressure in space.

Movies make it seem like the moment a hole is created it would immediately blow the whole thing apart.

Well reality sets in when those in space plugged the hole with duct tape.

It was in there capsule that was supposed to bring them back to earth.

Coming into the earth's atmosphere with a 2mm hole at 3000 degrees could be bad
