We had a discussion in our shop the other day and this question was brought up. What do they do with the test fired bullet from barrels? Are they just checking for functionality and throwing the bullet away or are they keeping it for legality purposes?

TIA

Good question. I know the test fired brass that Ruger includes is supposed to be surrendered (at the time of sale?) to The Man in states where it's required. Do any states require an actual slug?

My understanding is that the Slug is placed in a bag with the serial number and then it maybe turned over to the Feds. Then the info is entered into their database.

Fired brass? Used to. Fired bullet? No. How would you recover it? The shipped rifle also got the 100 yard 10 shot bench rest test target. Kinda hard to dig out and identify the bullets from the butts. Long ago, far away.

I think this may be still done to satisfy some silly law? Dunno.
