Well, it was disappointing to see Ginny do so poorly in the 50 meter 3 position rifle, that she failed to qualify for the final. But heck, even the best shots have bad days.
That Iranian woman wearing her Hijab made it to the final 8 again for 50 m 3 position too, but she was the first one eliminated. Just like in Air Rifle, the Chinese dominated. The Chinese woman Du Li that got the Silver in Air Rifle, also got the Bronze in 50 m 3 position. She is 34, and a veteran shooter of the Chinese team, with numerous awards over the years. The silver went to a young member of the China team named Binbin Zhang.
But the gold medal went to a veteran German shooter by the name of Barbara Engleder, who at 33 had come very close in the past to getting medals at a number of major international shooting events, but who always fell short in the past. It was fun rooting for her against the Chinese, and see her eventually come out on top, even though it was by the most slender of margins against the Chinese.
It was especially entertaining to see her react to her last shot. The match was so close, that the result was in doubt up to the final shot. When she made a fabulous last shot that sealed the deal for her to win gold, she let out a huge scream. All of her many years of practice and dedication to the sport was finally rewarded. All of that frustration of losing year after year was gone.
This is what the Olympics are all about, and why I am enjoying watching the games on TV.
