Who called it that first? Does our military refer to any of its guns as assault rifles? Do the manufacturers make something they call an assault rifle?

The two key words are "selective fire". meaning the capablity to fire semi and full auto by selecting the mode of fire. With a semi auto, there is no option to select. End of story. Thank Billy boy Clinton and his import ban and started coining the phrase assualt rifle. The media ran with it and pounded it down the American public's throat until everybody thinks it is true. Whats the term they used for the gun ban of 1994 in the "crime bill"? Oh yeah. Assault Weapons; a term wholly invented by the Media and the Politicians to define a semiauto that just so happens to share design similarities to the actual military assault rifles that are already heavily regulated and have not been legally available to general civilians since 1934 and transferable to non SOT FFLs since 1986

To clear this up, "Assault Rifle" is an intermediate caliber, carbine length, select fire rifle. "Assault Weapon" is a made up political term that means something different depending which politician's mouth it's in. Just to add to the fun, Washington state has invented the term "Semi-automatic Assault Rifle" which actually has two meanings: absolutely nothing and "your legislators are idiots".
