A better place IMO:

I read a long article about Whittier, AK off of a website (Newspaper or magazine.) a couple of years ago.

There may have been one posted on this forum or on a few other forums.

There were several articles over the years about this AK town and it's residents in various AK newspapers online too.

IMO - For the typical private civilian, there is more security in obscurity (e.g., remoteness, or otherwise being "out of sight") than there is in fortification.

Fortification combined with obscurity is a good thing too. Don't let your fortification be obvious. Making the location hard to access (beyond being remote and/or out of sight) is also good.

Putting a building/etc., much less a fortification, on top of a rock pillar (hopefully in a remote location) makes that location stand out - makes people curious what could be there, maybe something of value?

Having a shelter (or preferably a fortification) under the pillar and out of sight might be better?

Unless you have a viable farm and rainwater up there the attacker need only starve you out. They'd pull up some couches and surround the bottom of the cliff while holding barbecues.
If you had a drone or a trained falcon you could get pizzas or your enemy's eyeballs for the snackin.
Same thing, really.

That tunnel is a trip! 2.5 miles long, with 7 fallout shelters. The entire town shares one address... Interesting place and creepy AF during the offseason!
