I love my M&P 15-22! Very Accurate and eats the crappiest ammo that will give my 10/22 fits. I have a couple of thousand rounds through mine without any problems.

I don't mean to be the 'odd man out' but personally I am not into tacti 'cool' 'cal' or whatever but having owned a 10-22 (like many) the reliability, accuracy and number of 'practical' accessories for it makes it a no-brainer as the basis for something 'tacticool'. I'll take quality and reliability over something that looks 'tacticool' but has a questionable or poor track record.

Tacticool for me in .22 would be the new MP 44 that comes in the wooden crate. A very close replica of the granddaddy of all assault rifles the German STG 44/ MP 44. Spending at about $550 on the streets at your local FFL but to me it is just so cool. My favorite weapon from WWII in the original form. Would be awesome if they followed it up in 7.62x39!

Sig Mosquitos 22's are around $450ish depending what you get they are a full sized 22LR and almost as big as my P229 40sw.
I do know they need about 200 rounds through them and do much better with good quality ammo for first uses, after a break in they are near flawless any ammo.
Mosquitos are not well liked by some because for some reason they ma jam when brand new, but as said after a few hundred they mellow.
My Taurus PT-22 (Walther look alike nearly)was like that took about 200 rounds for it to clean up and fly right. The PT-22 is an oddity and is why I have one they are kinda wierd
and are the only California legal I own lol.

Hey Salted. My daughter and I both have mosquitos, hers is purple, mines OD green. Heard about the 200 round break in, didn't apply to ours. Out of the box they have run excellent, but we've only used CCI and Rem golden bullets. Cleaned and lubed both before shooting first time. Their Great.

PS I grew up in Sutherlin, nice down there isn't it.

Now here is classic Tacticool! The Mod 152 Mossberg - folding forestock and seven round mag (15's & 20's were once available) Until the 10-22 came out this WAS the semi-auto .22 to own. This was the rifle I learned to shoot with and recently given to me by my father.

I have the S&W M&P 15.22 rifle and M&P .22 pistol. I only bought these as training versions of the other firearms I carry/target practice with. They are as close to the real thing as I could find. Try the 15.22 out if you can before you make up your mind. Its a pretty solid .22 for the $

The mods for the 10/22 are endless. Here's my 10/22 in an archangel 556 stock very sturdy feels just like my ar and parts are every where for cheap. Rifle brand new 200 got the stock on eBay for 100. With all the goodies on got on there in still under 400.

Perfect for the wife and kid.

Pictures doesn't do this thing justice, the build quality is exceptional. It has some serious heft to it and feels and function just like the real thing.

I am tempted to have the barrel cut and reg it as a SBR.

Best $400 you can spend on a plinker.

Thanks PDXoriginal! I agree. Making that rifle an SBR would be excellent.

I run the Sig 522 and haven't had a problem with probably 6k rounds through it, mine is the early "black bolt" as well. When I looked the 10/22 archangel kit over in person I was not impressed and the same goes for the Colt. No personal experience with the others but have heard bad things regarding most of them. Have not heard a review of the HK MP5 .22 though, just the GSG.

I had a colt/umarex M4 .22lr and a S&WMP 22, I liked the feel and weight of the Umarex, it was not a polymer upper or lower, but heck of a beast to clean, and additional mags were a little hard to find, the S&W did not feel solid at all, so I sold that one too, all an all, I bought them the shoot economically but it's almost cheaper to shoot 5.56 now....
Colt functionally I liked better, it's the same firing mech as the HK .22lr rifle

+1 on the Ruger SR22 rifle, using the well proven 10-22 innards, with an external shell that resembles an AR-15, there are all kinds of internal upgrades you could do, plus they are made in USA and have a lifetime warranty!
