Florida's laws against the open carry of firearms will stand after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the petition of a Fort Pierce resident claiming the law is unconstitutional.

The 2012 case of Dale Norman, a Fort Pierce man arrested in February of that year for openly carrying a holstered pistol in public, was denied Monday by the highest court in the United States.

Norman was convicted of carrying a weapon openly — a second degree misdemeanor — by a jury in a St. Lucie court in 2014. He was ordered to pay a $300 fine, as well as court costs, according to court records.

With the backing of Florida Carry, Inc., a Second Amendment group, Norman began the appeal process in June 2014, according to court records.
