Have you ever purchased a firearm from a private party & had the gut feeling that the firearm might be stolen?

For period of time in my life I had access to NCIC etc to check serial numbers. Now I'm curious how a person can be protected.

In Oregon a private person can do a BGC on a firearm they are thinking of buying. There are conditions as well as a fee. but it can be done. A by product of our manditory BGC for all gun show sales.

In Oregon you can call the state police and have them run the serial number for free. They do require your name and location, however, for what I hope are obvious reasons.

Sent from my phone; typos likely.
