I like to browse reddit once in a while, mostly for r/EDC and r/CCW. I drop in on r/portland occasionally and the hate for business owners and landlords is somewhat shocking. I don't think they really understand where money comes from.

They really don't. We are raising generations that way. And brainwashing at Universities, and Leninizing adults. Sad times!

Don't they increase it based on income? I was shocked at how much the sales guy I work with had to pay. He's reaching the end and is pretty happy about it.

In Oregon it's at the judge's discretion... the judge I had's discretion placed it higher than ANY other state's alimony calculator would have prescribed and not by just a little. Trust me, I checked.
She also said it was to be paid "indefinitely" so I have no end in sight. I didn't even know that was a legal term but apparently it is.
I was waiting for the judge to die so I could open it back up again and request a reduction (first motion didn't go very well) as I did NOT want to end up in front of her again.
She wouldn't die, but she did retire... and was promptly replaced by Kate Brown with a younger version of the old bag.
The problem with going back to court for a reduction is that it opens it up to shenanigans, like tinkering with The Constitution. The judge could easily say, "You're right, Mr Yuma. This isnt fair or equitable... " then add another $500/mo, or worse.
I won't say exactly how much I'm paying, but in most places (not LA or NYC), it'd be a pretty healthy mortgage payment. And as I mentioned earlier in this thread, I'm eligible for a full-boat "stimulus" check... my AGI falls (un)comfortably short of the cutoff.

ETA: All of the above pertains to alimony only. Not child support which is completely different.

My ex got a lawyer in 1983. She was the one that wanted a divorce... I was still being stupid. But her lawyer demanded what amounted to 95% of my income plus the house (paid for) and our brand new car which I owed money on. i was fortunate enough to escape with what I originally offered... the house, the used car (paid for), and child support for our one child. Yet she somehow expected ME to continue paying for her kids expenses. After I told her to go after her ex for child support, she ruined my relationship with ALL the kids.


Alimony sucks Brother.

My dad would have been a rich man had he been smart enough not to get married 3 times, sunk in deep with me tho thankfully.

I know what you are saying... ya know, before no fault divorce, staying and working it out was a thing, leaving to get a pack of ciggies was considered low.... so personally, I stayed for 9.5 years of a 10 year marriage just to protect/shelter those kids, mostly from her!!!

Does not bother me. Topics like this include a hell of a lot of people. I have often told people who were just miserable that it can be better to go their own way. It happens. The only thing really bad is when the adults just can not let go. So rather than try to make it as easy as possible on the kids turn it into a war with the kids in the middle. Yes it sucks when a marriage falls apart and there are kids but if the adults try to work things with the kids in mind it does not have to be nearly as bad as some make it.

Exactly. Many have grown up being told nothing is ever their fault, all cops are animals who just want to kill, all business owners are greedy and users, and of course more Government is the answer to everything. Look how many who rent openly laugh at property taxes. They will go along with it saying the landlord is getting screwed and good. Until the rent goes up and they scream. It can be amazing to see it.

Since I have $500 EVERY WEEK jacked from my paycheck by the Fed (not counting auntie Kate and her local lackey thugs getting their cut to subsidize "affordable housing"!) it's not EVEN close to welfare since I'd be getting back some of my own money.


But then again, the pervasive mentality is that the government "has money", when in reality the only money government has is what they confiscate from you.

Reddit is a cesspool of hate and idiocy. I browse it often but have a very select few subs that I frequent. Clicking on /all or /popular just makes me sad for the future and like I need a shower.

Frankly, I would just prefer these checks not be a thing at all. We made a several trillion dollar series of decisions in just a few weeks. That's absurd and I can't say I know of many people who aren't going to just buy a new TV or similar. So yeah, free TV's for all
