Happy pills, yes, you can tell if they are stale. But (as an extreme example), how would you know if an expired anti-coagulant medication was doing the job?
My BP (nitro ER, amlodipine, metoprolol) and cholesterol meds do have noticeable effects. Stopping nitro ER will cause headaches, the other BP meds bring my BP down noticeably (I've even had PA/nurses ask if I have low BP after measuring it), and the statin pills have brought my cholesterol within acceptable limits.

The Robaxin has fairly immediate (within an hour or two) noticeable effects.

I think one year, maybe two is fine for these meds. Now that I have a years worth I won't be stocking up on too much more.

I've come to think that SHTF isn't going to come as a sudden, apocalyptic event. It's just going to come creeping along incrementally. Like what is happening now.
I've been saying for some time now, that "peak carrying capacity" issues are a long term event. I might not see a major "die off" (as in millions to billions of people dying) in my lifetime, but my kids may very well be around to see it. We are already seeing some conflicts over resources, at least partially related to peak carrying capacity.

I've also said that those who have prepared by having arable land growing their own food, that have a good well with good water, who have their own alternative energy sources (e.g., solar), who have these things some reasonable distance away from population centers - will be in a much better position for the future, whether the future contains a sudden catastrophic event or a more gradual one. Water, shelter, food, energy, arable land - all these things are only going to get more expensive and yes, scarce, over time.

Unfortunately many don't and won't have the resources to acquire land, water, power, etc away from population centers. Many are going to continue struggling just to afford rent.

Regardless of a person's situation they should do the best they can to prepare for bad times. Most are oblivious to how easily things could go from good to bad but I think @gmerkt is right about a slow rolling deterioration.

This ^^^. It's too late for most Americans to do that now, affordability has outpaced them.
And as more people of means move out to rural properties it will make the option even less obtainable.

One option for the poors is to combine incomes and try doing it commune style. That might work for those with socialist leanings. For those who like private property, it rarely works beyond blood family situations

Well, I did keep them for many years after the exp. date.
Well, if was many years past expiration, I see your point. I got the impression from your post that you tossed them immediately after the expiration date. My mistake.
So long as we aren't in SHTF mode, I'm going to rely on drugs as fresh as I can get.
No argument here. But if SHTF, expired meds are better than no meds. My philosophy is to rotate them like anything else, consuming them when they reach the "discard by" date and putting the newest in reserve. That allows me a reserve supply of about 1 year's worth that should be potent.

That said, I've pretty much reached the age where surviving SHTF is no longer a concern. I figure I'd last about 2 weeks tops in that environment anyway, meds or no meds. ;)

I might last two hours, two days, two weeks, two months or two years. A lot depends on when, where, how and why.

Stuff happens - at best we can guess probabilities of when, where, how and why. Worst case we can be totally wrong on all aspects, at best maybe 50/50.
