Martin Place siege: Could it have been averted if the customers had been armed?
Legally, Australians have a right to self-defence.
What we don't have is the practical ability to exercise that right. Owning any object for the purpose of self-defence, lethal or non-lethal, is a criminal offence. Those trapped within the Lindt cafe were left helpless, as carrying items for self-defence is not allowed under State law. What's worse, the offender possibly knew it.
Prohibited self-defence items include pepper sprays, mace, clubs and personal Tasers. In some states, carrying a pocket-knife is illegal and even wearing a bullet-proof vest is banned.

Personal right: Prohibited self-defence items include pepper sprays, mace and personal Tasers.
Those agile enough to retreat from an assailant can do so, and it is lawful to use items at hand such as screwdrivers, kitchen knives and beer glasses. But for those who are unable to flee, insufficiently strong, or with no improvised weapon, there is no option but to rely on the police.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott is protected by armed guards at taxpayers' expense, and the wealthy can hire armed security guards, but everyone else relies for their safety on the police. And as the saying goes, when seconds count the police are minutes away.
What this means is that self-defence is not a realistic option for most people, and especially not for the majority of women, elderly and disabled. We have become a nation of defenceless victims.
This is not to criticise the NSW police, who did their best in difficult circumstances. But the police cannot be everywhere and we shouldn't expect them to keep us safe all the time.
Australia's ban on practical self-defence sets it apart from most other countries. Almost none prohibit non-lethal means of self-defence, while many permit ownership of firearms at home.
Australia's prohibition on practical self-defence is recent, emanating from the 1996 changes in firearms laws that followed the Port Arthur massacre. Not only were many types of firearm prohibited, but Australia embraced an international push to prohibit civilian ownership of firearms for self-defence.
This was driven by several factors. One was a desire to avoid America's "gun culture". However, this was broadened to include all means of self-defence. There was also a strange version of the precautionary principle – the wrong-headed belief that average citizens would one day be overcome by murderous tendencies.
Then there are perennial claims that resistance is futile and that items of self-defence can be turned against those using them. Any woman who has fought off a would-be rapist – and there are many – knows this to be untrue.
Mythologising about firearms is a feature of Australian public debate. Many seriously believe the solution to any crime involving a gun is more gun laws. And yet the offender in the Lindt cafe did not have a gun licence and in any case the sawn-off shotgun he was using is illegal.
Perhaps Australians will never embrace the use of guns for self-defence except in special cases (a battered wife dealing with a murderous ex-husband, for example). But they never agreed to or accepted being rendered defenceless. If asked, I believe most would unequivocally demand the right to practical self-defence, at least using non-lethal means.
And it should never have reached this stage. Only an authoritarian society would treat its citizens as victims, with the government masquerading as a guardian angel. Free societies have a strong emphasis on individual self-reliance.
Restrictions on non-lethal means of self-defence should be removed, while methods with potential to cause harm should be available but restricted to trained, responsible adults; It is time to stop pretending the government can protect us from events such as the Lindt cafe siege.

Yeah, in the state of Victoria it's illegal to carry a pocket knife (BTW- I still keep one on me anyway when I go there to visit family... LOL). I remember once reading an article in the newspaper when I was over there about a telephone repair guy getting hassled by the cops because of a Leatherman multi-tool on his belt! That law came about because of Asian immigrants joining gangs and then taking knives and swords to each other in gang fights. Awesome rationale, yes?

They welcome all the Middle Easterners and then they take all rights to self defense away. I hope the rest of the world just stops dong business with them. They are worse than the UK.

    .
Australia and The UK are just a couple of places that have neutered it's citizens and disarmed them.

Gun Control to the point of full confiscation is rapidly approaching here.

The right to defend yourself is under attack here as well.
Tiny fragments dedicated to fight back will fall and the reason is the majority are
cowardly and will not lift a finger when the time comes.
Unless all pro gun, pro America people team together, there is doom in the horizon.

There are people in this country that are attempting the same thing that has been done in the UK and Australia and as they have done with everything else for the past 40++ years they will disarm and turn you all into blubbering wimps with no arms and anything that you could defend yourself with.

They boiled the frogs, (the citizens), and got hold of our schools at all levels and have infiltrated into our government at ALL levels and they will do this to each and every one of you unless you fight back now at what ever level it takes to put a complete stop to it and shut them down.

A full blown MARXIST was elected into the Whitehouse.....that should but didn't scream that America is very Sick right now. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN ???????????????

They want to ban body armor, they want to ban semi automatic arms and they want to register every gun in the country for the end purpose of confiscation and they have limits on knives already to where you can't have one more than about 3" and some places none at all.

They want to ban ammunition and or tax it out of existence, they want to pass laws against defending yourself.

They are working on it now and no one is doing one damned thing.

It will catch you and rip you up before you know what hit you if you each do not team together and beat this back to the stone age.

They have a foot hold in this country that is beyond comprehension and everyone pretends they do not exist.

And they ARE The Socialist/Marxist/Communist/Islamic garbage that has nearly destroyed this nation beyond repair.

They are ramping up at a rate faster than the Patriotic Americans can keep up with because of the degree of APATHY that exists. \

The passage of 594 in WA is a symptom of a very sick and damaged society. No One cared, no one voted.

Try to watch the documentary 'Rocky Mountain Heist' on NEWSX or wherever you can find it. Beyond Comprehension is an understatement that is clearly defined in it.

That takeover began in the 60's in Boulder and spread like a plague. We were working there for a while in a community next to it, Loveland and Estes Park. Even then Boulder was hippy town for the wealthy druggies and leftist dregs. They have spread nation wide now. Barbed wire and an "injection" is about all that will help stop them now.

Interesting to read the comments posted on that article - they are so conditioned to believe guns are evil that they would rather continue completely defenseless so they don't "end up like America", where guns are everywhere and we all shoot each other in the streets all day long. It's crazy, the stuff being said has no basis in reality (which is easy to verify), but they buy what they're told and wholeheartedly believe it. I don't think there's much hope for them, too many live in more fear of legal guns and gun owners than criminals - and that is really messed up. What's scary is that many people here believe that it's safer to let only the criminals have guns. How completely mental is that?

You are correct. My wife is an Aussie and she always has an eye and ear on the news back home.

It's a horrific situation, the youngest was 18 months old, and it's enough to make me vomit.
