Hello,

I'm in the process of starting a part-time firearms instructing business in Northeastern Oregon. It'll most be based around teaching CHL classes for Oregon and (eventually) Utah. I'm looking to get my NRA pistol instructor certification along with the NRA RSO certification. Other than those two things, are there any courses that I could do to pad my resume?

Thanks

Get ALL the Certs. - Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Muzzleloader Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun etc. - that you can and then spend some time Volunteering for the Scouts and State Hunter Ed Classes. The NRA Whittington Center also has a number of programs for Instructors you might want to look into. The Adventure Camp is just one. Make a name for yourself and then start charging. That's my suggestion.

I didn't even know about that Whittington Center! Looks really cool. Classes look super affordable too. Maybe I can try to do some shift trades at work and take a trip to New Mexico!

Might also want to look into the USCCA, Armed Citizens' Legal Defense Network and Personal Defense Network instructor-development programs, depending on costs. If you have the creds for everybody and can cover the entire curriculum, that gives your students greater flexibility in leveraging that education.

NRA and Utah. Keep in mind that with Utah you will have to renew your instructor cert every 3 years which requires you to either go to SLC or St George. Utah BCI has stepped down the instructor classes to every other month, it use to be monthly except December.

In spite of the fact the NRA threw us under the bus with the bump fire stock ban which may carry over to binary triggers, the NRA training is the de facto standard for civilian instructors.

I was Nevada approved through LVMPD from 2008-2013. I do more business after the Nevada recognition statute was further relaxed in 2015 teaching a multistate including Utah than Nevada then relaxed to requiring only two criteria; 24/7 online verification via NLETS and any training requirement.

The only reason to get a Nevada CFP is if you're living in or relocating to Nevada or buy long guns in Nevada and need the NICS exemption which is $25 per FFL transaction as Nevada now recognizes the big non-resident States AZ, FL, OR and UT. I let my LVMPD Nevada approval lapse in 2013.

When did Nevada start recognizing Oregon?

ETA--further research shows that Nevade started honoring Oregon in 2017.

June 25, 2017. Nevada DPS audits the recognition on or before the start of a new fiscal year annually which is July 1. And by big non-resident states, I mean big for Oregon. If you don't live in Oregon, then AZ, FL or UT are the big ones if you travel to Nevada frequently. And yes, you can legally carry in casinos and other adult establishments unless they have metal detectors. Just keep it concealed and don't do anything stupid.

I would be happy to help if you are interested in teaching classes with ODFW for hunters education. NRA pistol is all you need to get started, add the rest later.

Get all of the certifications you can and then some, also try to bring on someone to help teach who has even more experience.
Someone once wanted to teach a class through my shop and after many questions on my part as to his experience it turns out he just liked to play a "lot of airsoft" lol no real certifications.

You'll find that the certifications will be beneficial ... uhh, even if only superficial... its a plus for getting insurance too. Which, if you plan on doing any live fire at a range... they will probably require you to have insurance.

Be aware/confident of your skillset and also target your marketing accordingly. Start doing classes... people will eventually show and if your presentation and technique resonate with your students, you will be successful.

There are guys out there who have served for decades and pulled triggers in every condition imaginable... or guys who have shot competitively for years and have an impressive array of awards........ but that doesnt mean that they can teach people to shoot.

I'd like to assist coaching a youth program in air-rifle/smallbore near my part of town (Hillsboro, near Portland).

I just haven't had the best of luck getting there! I don't have the experience to start my own program, so I would like to contribute to one that's already established. A wall and folder full of certificates, and nothing to do with 'em!

Contact your county extension office and become a 4H Shooting Sports leader.

I've been doing it for a number of years. They use air rifle and pistol, along with shotgun. They will put you through the training.
