I thought it was all made for short barrels.

It will all work but not the same. You lose a lot of velocity with standard ammo in a short barrel (I had a Kimber Ultra Carry) From what I remember reading the Speer ammo burns faster to ensure it completely burns before the bullet leaves the short barrel. Some standard rounds did not do that.
