Anyone know just how bad the roads are in the Portland area? My daughter went to work today, against her mother's wishes (I was at work). She works over near the Portland airport, has a very long commute.

I just heard reports of freezing rain. She's young and knows nothing about driving in weather like this. She's planning on leaving for home at 8. I'm tempted to go pick her up in my truck, but she's really independent and insists that she'll be fine.

Text Report Tabs have road surface temps. I think Troutdale is approximately Mile Post 16.90, and it doesn't have any recent updates. Cameras show snow on shoulders, and some reflection on road surfaces.

I didn't see this earlier or I would have checked for you sorry. If you are still around and it's not too late I can check them for you. 8:45 pm now.

Check out this video of I-5. Those pickups are causing major problems for everyone else.

All wheel drives or 4x4 makes no difference if you ain't got the traction to begin with
Once again..... :s0140: seems a lot of people forget that they need some weight over the drive wheels, and/or proper tires for the condition. Fair sure that those two have worn/summer tires, and empty beds with absolutely no weight whatsoever.

Those pickup drivers are idiots. Both broadside blocking the whole freeway. Red pickup was hit by the tanker truck you can see it move when truck hits it. At least with the idiot Subaru drivers who think they can do anything because "I got 4 wheel drive!" they go fast and when they hit their brakes they end up on their roof in the ditch and don't block everyone else.

They could also air down tires too.. but it looked like at least one of the two have rubber bands for tires? And if so... Terrible choices of wheel/tires for winter. Not even carrying chains I bet.

Edit. Pull over, call Les Schwab, get a credit card out, have them bring tire chains

Worst snow experience: Got caught in a sudden snowstorm on I-5 between Weed and Redding, Calif. Nobody had "traction devices." I keep a set of chains in my car, the kind with the big hoops on them that you can throw on in ten minutes. I was able to escape off the interstate but I was delayed by hours. Oh, and my plans were to gas up once I got to Redding so I was low on fuel.
Every damn year we road trip to points Southwest, and since our kid gets mid February off school, this is when we drive I5 South. The Siskiyou pass is the worst.

Every vehicle we've driven has been safe and capable, but we get stuck with everyone else driving on bald Chinese tires.

Going tomorrow. Not looking forward to it.

Speaking of tires... I've gotten mine from Les Schwab forever and always look for tires with the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol. Current tires on my GMC 2500 HD are a set of their Backcountry A/T's with the 3PMSF. Regardless of brand, get a set of tires with that symbol on 'em and you'll be much safer on snow and ice.

I would wait until late morning when things start to thaw. Or maybe it will be thawed tomorrow anytime I don't know. We had freezing rain last night then a few inches of snow on top of that. But weather report says above freezing today and tonight. So it may all be gone by tomorrow at least on the main roads anyway.

I checked the forecast, so far it's saying Saturday should be good. I'm pretty sure it's messy this morning, fingers crossed the forecast holds and tomorrow is passable

My daughter made it home just fine last night. I told her I'd come get her if there was any question, but she was insistent that she'd be fine. She said there wasn't much traffic on the road, roads weren't as bad as they were made out to be, and she drove slow and careful. I guess the way to learn is just to drive out in it.

I've spent my whole life here in western Oregon. Per some of you all here, that must make me a knuckle-dragging dolt who doesn't know how to drive, drives way too slow, can't make a left turn, and won't ship packages. :)

I grew up on the farm, spinning cookies in the mud and snow out in the cow pastures before I was old enough to drive on the road, running old trucks, tractors, backhoes and bulldozers. I know full well that I'm not the best driver on the road, but I must be doing something right, never wrecked a car in my nearly four decades of driving.

We spun doughnuts where/when I got to driving age! I still wonder how we never got busted by police? Not that we'd be "Busted" busted, but get a talking to is probably the way it would have gone.

I watched a nerd in a Subaru this morning think his bubblegum was the best and speed by the house.
Then he passed another car that was driving up the hill.
He was easily going 10-15mph faster than the other car that was moving along at a fine pace.
