    All-steel version of better-known 439.
    Single stack, 8- or 9-round capacity 9mm, 4.1" barrel.
Traditional DA/SA action with hammer-drop safety.
Only ~1500 nickel-plated 539s were made in the early 1980s.
Gun is near mint, with only a small "ding" on the slide, visible just forward of the safety.
I'd intended to shoot this gun, bought spare mags in anticipation of doing so, but decided I just don't like the DA/SA action.
No box or manual, but original mag and four spare factory mags.
    $600

Here's the 539 with its cousin, the Commander.
Both the Commander and the original S&W 39 were attempts to interest the army in replacing the M1911A1 after WWII.
After the army declined to adopt either gun, the 39 was offered to the public in the mid-'50s. It was the first semi-automatic 9mm pistol adopted by a major U.S. police force.
The upgraded 439 and 539 were introduced about 1980, featuring fully-adjustable sights. Shortly after the stainless steel 639 was introduced, the 539 was discontinued.
