My dad was a kid living in Budapest in 1956. He remembers the overpowering smell of the dead, and the Russian tank crews cooked alive by Molotov Cocktails ("shrunk down to the size of a baby"). There were propaganda broadcasts from the West urging the Freedom Fighters to hold on, help was "on its way". But of course, help from the West never came.

Something else he has told me, which I found fascinating, is the Russian Troops believed they were in Cairo. Or at least the ones who came in contact with my father & grandfather did believe this.. Incredulous today, but that was before smart phones and internet.

Anyhow, hard to believe Western Intel first learned of the AK in 1956. This I did not know.
