My wife doesn't always pay attention to her surroundings and I've been concerned that she'll get into trouble at some point because of this. However, tonight, she made me think that she's starting to change.

She's at a work conference in Mexico at the moment. I asked her several times leading up this whether her organization had given any thought to the "troubles" down there right now. She indicated that nobody had said anything about it, so things must be safe. :s0077: Last week, their internal security group suddenly got very involved in the conference, sending two of their security specialists along with the group and hiring "local contractors" (whoever that might be) to help while down there.

I asked if these folks were armed. To my surprise, she said "no" and then listed all of the things she checked/observed in coming to that conclusion - bulges under jackets, outlines in pockets, bags carried, clothes worn, etc. To be honest, I was very pleased that she was checking at all & thought she did a good job of analyzing the situation.

Anyway, for those of you with family/friends who sometimes just don't "get it" with situational awareness, there's hope yet!

I'm still working with my GF on that. So far, she only checks for bulges under my jeans. I keep telling her there's more than one place to pack a gun. I guess it just takes time...

I came home early one day. Wife heard a strange noise in the house and cleared the house from point A to me without me hearing but one sound of her knee popping halfway down the hall. I couldn't have done better myself.

Then there are other times outside of her enviroment when she's (I think) as unaware as everybody else.

Win some, Lose some.

When I got home from work today, the front door was locked, but not closed all the way. I was able to push the door open, go upstairs and find my wife fast asleep! My wife has no situational awareness whatsoever, and I am always telling her to not forget her pepper sray when she leaves the house. I wish I could talk her into CCW, but that is not likely to happen any time soon. That can be the problem with some small-town girls; they just are far too trusting sometimes...

I highly doubt my wife would ever get a CCW permit. She'll go to the range with me and is a decent shot (maybe better than me...). However, I don't think she really likes having guns around and just puts-up with the ones I have.

We've had discussions about what she'd do in various situations, and if the choice if fight or flight, she'll usually opt for flight. I keep explaining to her that you don't always get the choice.

I've been trying to teach my daughter about situtational awareness throughout her upbringing. I teach her by bringing things up as the situation presents it's self. For example...

We park the truck at the hardware store and I ask her to look around for people in the immediate area. Then I explain that when she starts driving herself places, she will be safer if she looks around before unlocking the door and getting out. And that she should be willing to drive to a different store, or leave and come back later, if she sees anyone who makes her uncomfortable.

Probably not a good approach with the wife but seems to be pretty effective with children.

My last (ex) wife had been a rape victim decades ago, yet she REFUSED to take sensible precautions about locking up the house. She simply hated the entire idea that anyone should "yield to fear," or even simply take reasonably-based caution in a rough neighborhood.

I finally got her attention on the issue, by pointing out that an intruder was likely to simply KILL her immediately and then RAPE her DOG! Somehow that idea did compute with her.

Also waking her up was the fact that the next-door neighbor's house was ransacked and robbed---while they slept!.......................elsullo
