I haven't had overwhelmingly good results with covers. The ones I put on lever or bolt guns were kind of pointless. The ones I put on self-loading carbines and machine-guns didn't last long; more than one catching fire. Reckon I'll circle back to it someday; or not.

If this cover catches fire then I have a lot bigger problems going on. Likely my vehicle is on fire.
My $7 DIY covers seem to stay cooler and grip better than silicone slip on covers, and hold up better than other commercial covers while being practically free in comparison (IE TAG)

@gun2 I tried your silicone dishwashing mat idea. We'll see if the bastard catches on fire or not. :s0112:

I hate laying the hot suppressor in the car when it's time to go. If this helps with that will be totally worth it. One gorilla mat = about 3 suppressors worth of material. Wonder if that camo tape will catch on fire? Might need some type of high temp BS on there?

The homemade dish mat wraps are not for mag dumps, full auto, binary type usage.

I forget at the moment their generally assumed temperature rating, 400degrees or something.

If your usage keeps temperatures under the generally assumed temp rating, you'll be fine.

If your usage gets your suppressor too hot, you will not be fine. May damage an expensive suppressor too.

Looks good! I like the black mat better, my "tan" was more like cream colored. -I like how you made the 2 piece version too!

I haven't needed high temp tape… granted, I use it on a bolt action mostly but it's .308 and I'll "rapid fire" 20 rounds and the barrel will be smoking…. I don't know if you can tell in the picture but I overlapped the ends of the mat so it blocks the heat from the tape. -you could always use fiberglass wrap if those ones don't hold up!

Fiberglass is a good idea. They probably make some teflon or other wonder material tape too. I had the camo tape on hand so it's worth a try.

Yeah, for mag dumps you're best leaving it uncovered so it can cool better. -The covers are more for shooting with optics >4x to knock down mirage. That said, my homemade covers have held up better than my TAG covers (I forgot what brand the other one was that melted), while allowing the can to cool better as well.

What Damage have you seen to suppressors from a cover? -I've seen commercial covers melt/burn and jack up finishes, bot nothing other than cosmetics. -The silicone covers seem to dry out and get crispy on the surface if you cook them, but NOT stick to the can or ruin the finish from what I have seen.

Yah just finish Issues, however would be reasonable to imagine premature "meltdown" failure on a covered suppressor used heavily.

I asked Yankee Hill about Cerakoting a suppressor and they recommended no finishes. They specifically said they want nothing to reduce the cooling of the suppressor.

I've been making and selling Can covers, actually started a little company doing so (Ameri-Can Covers and Accessories). We use a 2 part system the inner layer materials are "rated" to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. I have them priced at $70 shipped for regular and have higher dollar ones for higher recoiling MG's like the 338 next gen military squad weapon systems.
AmeriCanCover2a.com is the website, it's not done yet but will be soon.

Got some inexpensive carbon fiber cloth. Tried cutting to fit at first but it unravels as you wrap it so not worth the trouble.
IMG_3339.jpeg
Much better and faster to leave it long then trim it after wrapping
IMG_3340.jpeg
After trimming looks like this. Can slide off end of can a bit to trim then slide back.

For .22 cans I just used carbon fiber only then camo tape (no silicone mat) cuz they don't get very hot.

Silicone melting point is 446 F. Carbon fiber is 6,700 F.

Cost:
- $4 for camo tape that I bought years ago on clearance. Reg cost I think is $11
- $18 for gorilla dish mat
- $20 for carbon fiber. Got like 10 ft. For future projects. A smaller size would be $9

5 suppressors covered 2 of which are 22 (no silicone). Should work but if they don't it's not the end of the world for that $. Camo tape is the weak link cuz not designed for that. Could use high temp tape instead but we'll see how it holds up in .308 rapid fire. My 8.5" one has a lot of heat going out the barrel.

Awesome! Do you have a link to the CF you bought? I'm excited to hear how it holds up!

@Saladfarmer; those look good and the price is very reasonable for what you describe! -Do they come in specific sizes or are they made to order?

It was on Amazon. They had 7.5" wide for $9ish but sold out so ended up buying 10' x 12" I think it was. I honestly think fiberglass would work just as well cuz they are both woven and it wouldn't get hot enough to damage either I'm thinking. Just thinking of maybe using the carbon fiber for some other project it the future.

Just remembered I bought one of these infrared thermometers on Amazon for $12ish on sale. It was recommended on a YouTube channel. Could be useful to test metal vs cover temp after x rounds of different calibers. Things are often more interesting when you make a scientific test out of it.

That would be a decent way to gauge to prevent possible problems, for rapid fire. So many rounds & you'd know you need to let it cool. Then roughly for how long to let it cool before you can use it again.

Made to order since having supplies on hand and ready, that way I don't get bound up. I have quite a few options of color and pattern.
I've found that there's usually about 4 sizes that are pretty common. 5", 6", 7.5" and 8" But I have done in between those a few times.
