this is a complete fully functional signal that does not require any flare gun to use
Signal is used at night to light up the battlefield
It reaches a height of about 750 feet and burns at 100,000 candlepower for about a minute
This will light up a football field like daytime on a pitch black night
This can cause a fire and the falling casing injure personell if hit
These are great fun but not a toy

We used these in the USCG. They work well, but as mentioned you don't want to use them where they may start a fire because they do not always extinguish before they get to the ground (or the sea in our case) and even if they do, they are very hot. I still have one.

So you're saying it's still hot after all these years?

:D

Just too wimpy to fire it off.

The recoil hurts your hand.

Seriously, I have been afraid to start a fire and I don't want anyone to think there is an emergency; whenever a flare was sighted along the coast it would be reported to the CG and they would go out and investigate. Occasionally somebody would be doing training/etc. and they would notify us first, but we would still get reports. It was good to know that there was usually somebody watching the coast besides us. We would see flares too sometimes - we usually had someone in the watchtower if the weather allowed any visibility at all, especially if the bar wasn't closed.

As the OPFOR out in the Mojave Desert of Ft. Irwin (1984-1988) we used these alot! I used to bring a few of these home on leave in my carry on luggage for the family to enjoy during the 4th of July. Times sure have changed. Can you imagine packing a few of these in your carry on these days?

Mid 1969 the Army decided a new training film for Armor was needed.
Ft Knox was the place, our Bn was selected because we had M48A2 and M60A1 tanks
Plus a Cav Troop, which had Sheridans.....

Perfect for showing Good Guys vs Baddies.....
And our crews had largely been w Cav units across the pond.......

The M48s had M1919 CoAx MGs, the M60s had M60s...Plus MOD 2s and M85 2 speed .50s.
So M2 ['06] and 7.62 ammo needed. .50BMG too......
Plus Pyrotechnics Galore: CASES of M80 firecrackers and Cherry Bombs, Parachute flares,
Star clusters, Ground Burst Simulators, Smoke grenades, etc.

CASES OF EVERYTHING....:):):)

The Holywood Co planned on a 2 week shoot, ordered the goodies accordingly,
then bagged it after 1 week only.....

Lots of stuff left over,
and as one would expect they Opened EVERY SINGLE CAN or BOX...
and as a result nothing could be turned back in, so future use by us OK.

Every unit had it's own Locked Cage for storing it all... PERFECT.

Then the Post Fire Marshal came thru and Ordered for every unit to clean em out.....:(

Turning it in meant that it would all get burnt or destroyed...o_O:confused:

This was perfectly good stuff.....
Paid for by We the Peoples......
Now more gonna be spent to destroy it......:oops:

The Bn Ammo section was 1/ 5 ton truck, 1 Lt, and 2 enlisted;
A PFC who because of getting drunk in Germany and Wrongfully Appropriating a 2 1/2 Ton truck and wrecking it,
was tried, and now had to pay for it w/ a new 6 yr hitch..
Beat prison....:p

And a SPc 4 from the S side of Chicago who was probly the 2nd most prejudiced person
I have ever known, and he was on leave at the time...

So what's a Good 'Murican to do?

Our Primary Mission was to "Close with and Destroy the Enemy."
That meant maintaining equipment And Supplies.......

Private Vehicles were Not Allowed inside the fence at the dump,
So the 1Lt would park his GTO in the lot in the TREES, and ride the 5 ton.
Now That 5T had some idling issue, and would choke up and blow smoke
if allowed to idle tooo long.
And that seemed to happen whenever he got to his GTO.
Fortunately he had a tool box in the trunk.:D

and a nice sized storage box was under the driver's door on the 5T. :D:D

Things were looking good,
but it would take a better plan to Liberate all of that Reg'lar Army Munitions....

Homey gets back from Chicago, PFC tells him what is going on, sort of an invite,
and that Idiot went out to the dump ON HIS OWN and Turned All of it in.......:mad:

Forrest Gump would have wanted in on a Good Mission like this one.....
That dude did what he did just due to racial prejudice......

The small arms were both linked and boxed 20 rnds. Current production too.....

The '06 was 3/4 Linked API,every 4th a tracer.
The boxed was mostly straight API...

.Similar w/ the 7.62 NATO...

There was 20,000 rnds of the '06.....
Need I say More???

Yup, Lt and pals went to a State park w/ GFs and a portable record player,
got Drunk drunk,
and 1 of em fired off a Star cluster a wee bit low across the river into the woods.......
A State Park, 4/ 1Lts and 3 college girls......

The 2 guys that made it to the 4 rings of fire managed to put them out,
in August,
while the others danced Irish jigs to Finnigan's Wake.....

Just 1 more unsolved thingy in Ky..

What would 2oK of '06 API be worth today????:(
